http://www.thisisgloucestershire.co.uk/latestnews/Tewkesbury-man-dies-M5-hit-run/article-343561-detail/article.html

A MAN was killed as he walked along the M5 in a suspected hit-and-run.

The 31-year-old, believed to be Michael Ryder, of York Road, Tewkesbury, was found by police on the northbound carriageway of the motorway, north of junction nine, at 5.15am yesterday.

He had been struck by a vehicle in the left-hand lane of the motorway near the slip road.

Police shut the road between junctions eight and 11 for 11 hours as forensic officers dressed in black carried out a finger-tip search of the crash scene.

A white forensic tent was placed in the middle lane of the motorway.

Police found a wing mirror at the scene. They believe it belongs to a 2004 to 2006 silver Honda CRV 4x4 and are keen to speak to the owner of the vehicle.

Officers also want to speak to the drivers of two cars spotted at rest on the hard shoulder, 300 metres north of the accident site.

The northbound carriageway of the motorway was closed from 5.30am until 4.30pm to allow the investigation to take place.

Heavy goods vehicles were diverted from the motorway on to the A46, and traffic was directed to the Golden Valley bypass and A38.

The closure caused huge tailbacks in Cheltenham and Tewkesbury as motorists followed alternative routes.

A spokeswoman for Gloucestershire police said: "Between 5.15am and 5.20am, a pedestrian, spotted walking on the northbound carriageway between junctions nine and eight, was struck by a vehicle, also travelling northbound, that failed to stop.

"Paramedics confirmed the man dead at the scene and the coroner has been informed.

"Anyone who witnessed the incident or who has any information should call Gloucestershire police on 0845 090 1234 quoting incident 160 of September 21.

The accident comes days after Chief Constable Tim Brain appealed for drivers in the county to slow down.

He said that the high death toll on the county's roads was due to driving too fast.

Obviously he shouldnt have been there in the first place.
But the driver should have stopped.

Views, discuss.

Nasty shit.....

Coming back from Cinema friday night....was easily 1am and was on a dual carrageway and there was a guy standing in the middle of the road with his shirt off trying to stop cars.....

Was close to hitting him.....fucking prick....would of been mashed all over my bonnet. 500 yards up the road the police were at the roundabout arresting some other half naked guy

My friend hit an old man who was walking in the middle of the road. He didnt know he hit anything. He only clipped him with his drivers side wing mirror. He got to my mates house (Who he works with) and said to his friends that he smashed his wing mirror. When it got light he looked at the van and it had blood all over it. My mate told him to go to station and report it just incase it was a dog or something stupid. He did.

Was arrested there and then for killing a man and leaving the scene. He was sentanced to 2 years but only served 1.

Harsh as fuck driving away and not stopping, and he didnt deserve to die at all, but why was we walking down the motorway? and also the person must of gone onto the hard sholder in order to hit him unless he was walking in the lanes themselves, but then sureley people would of seen it?

Tents in the middle lane so im guessing the guy was in the middle of the motorway.

And at 70 (ish) someone in the road early morning darkness, your not really going to spot them until your quite close.

Maybe if the driver wasn't hogging the middle lane and was in the inside lane this would never have happened.

did he really not know he hit him or was he just pretending?

the feeling of finding out youd killed a man when you thought youd clipped a dog would be fucking awfull like.

That is proper harsh, least he actually went to admit what happened though and not let police find him.

I do recall you saying something on here about him coming out a while ago.

Not neccesarily. If you think about how far a body is going to travel if its hit at 70+ mph then it could end up almost anywhere

Dont think the last comment on the story is necessary, about speed.

He could have been doing 60 and that guy still would have had no chance if he hit him full on.

Maybe he had broken down and as he lived so close decided to walk home and sort it in the morning?

Maybe he knew one of the people who were stopped further up the road and he was walking to help them?

Theres no excuse for not stopping really, but I can only imagine you'd be bricking it if you hit someone, i can easily imagine being too scared of the consequences to stop, especially if you're not from the area, you may think you can get away.

Then again, if the person didnt know what they'd hit, you are never gonna expect it to be a person on the motorway! and if you arent from the area you probably wont see it on the news to be fair.

just cos the body is in the middle lane dont mean he was hit in the middle lane, 99% chance he probably wasnt in the middle lane, cos a body would get thrown quite a distance at 70mph
