Crappy 6x9’s

Why do my 6x9's sound so crap? I wired them in to the origional rear speaker wires using one of these connectors on each wire.

I was using the standard head unit and all that was working was the tweeter so i bought a jvc head unit and now they sound even worse! There still about 1/4 of the bass that the standard front speakers are making and they distort when i try n turn up the volume! They are jbl 300watt 6x9's. Does anyone know what i could try to get them sounding decent? Or at least working propperly! They are not in a stealth shelf yet just sitting on the boot of my car but i dont see how this wouldmake them this poor!

they are 6x9's they will NEVER sound good. but that aside they will be distorting because your trying to run them off some thing that will put out about 15wrms and they are rated at what? something like 120wrms. The headunit cant get the power to tehm and the signal is suffering hence distortion

im thinking both speakers are running off the rear channel, which of course will sound ****, also scot's right, running 6x9's off a headunit is not the best way to go. Your under powering the speakers. The reason standard speakers would sound better is the fact that the are designed to run off low power, so there are producing there optimal sound quality. If your going to run 6x9's (better off getting decent front speakers and a sub) then your best to run them off n amp mate .

I disconnected the rear speakers just used those connectors cos they were the easiest to use in that crapt space. Im not sure what to try cos a few of my mates have put 6x9's on to the origional wires with just a head unit (on corsas tho) and they sound normal mine just sound wrong!

swap teh wires round you may have the + and - mixed up

it varies mate, i have traced mine from the stereo back. Who ever wired the car decided to changed the polarity half way along the car only on one side. best way to tell is wire up both ways and listen for whats best

ok ill try that but so far they seem to sound the same both ways! im going to install a pair of subs later on today when my mate delivers them! So i might run some new wiring up to the 6x9's direct from the head unit.

leave the 6x9's out mate, if your having subs in the boot then the 6x9's are going to sound even worse. 6x9's on the parcel shelf are going to use the same air as the subs, and change in air presure from the subs will distort the 6x9's, and worse the bass from them. In some conditions subs can cause them to burn out if they create to much presure. Also if you havent changed the front speakers you are going to have to all the sound in the back of the car !! you sit in the front, so it would back more sence to have decent front speakers with the subs, that way you would have decent sound in the fornt, instead of muffed sound in the back.

i run 6*9's in a stealth along with a 12" sub!

i have no issues what so ever.......

if people have a good setup then there wont b any issues!

as i said just my opinion. But if you diconect the 6x9's and they move with the air produced with the sub, then surely your going to have problems if the speakers wants to move for the mid/treble and the sub is forcing the cone of the speaker up. Its a proved thing, but it all depends on the amount of presure your sub creates. Ive read loads into this and being a pro installer you have to cover all angles of an install to make sure no problems occur.

a good setup does not include 6x9's. ever. Even less when you have a sub in the boot.

Exactly as krystal says its a proven thing, it doesnt work and it wont ever work.

BUT if you happy with mediocre sound then carry on, personally i like not to waste money.

i have got 6*9's and as agreed, the demo install im havin next yr will also include them!!

i dont run my sub 24/7 i find it annoyin and 6*9's mean i can have abit of bass with the sub turned off.......even with the sub on it isnt mediocre - ever!

beleive what you want its fact, they cant produce bass, they dont do mids and they are shit at treble.

Never once has a proper install included 6x9s unless its some piece of shit max power project.

Ill stick with proper high quality sound.

There gone smileys/smiley17.gif Pulled them out before i read those last replys lol they was annoying me sounding so crap! So im going to sell them on ebay was a waste of time buying em. Anyway ive now got 2x10" alpine 500watt subs and a 2 channel 1000watt alpine amp not yet wired up tho! Im probley going to get soem components for the front now. Has anyone replaced the rear speakers? Or is it not worth it because they are mounted to plastic will just rattle?

im fed up having to tell people the facts if you think mediocre speakers make a good setup then thats up to you.

Of course im biased i want good sound not crap sound.

and have a read, plenty of technical info as to why they are rubbish there and save me from repeating myself for the 1000th time.

they can produce mids, treble and bass dependin on frequency and they are also a cheap way of gettin mid bass! run them of an amp and they perform much better!

the distortion alot of people find is bad setup and not the speakers

i ve to agree with both of you. i dont like 6x9's as a rule. But if you want them are happy with them fair enough. You can get 6x9's to produce bass, i.e the vibe square 6x9's.

Personal i would have not have them, but a good point is that if you dont want the subs on the 6x9's will give you rear fill. They do how ever distort if you have subs in the boot. Most people cant hear the distortion aas the subs are over powering.

i did try putting a set in a box once and they did sound a lot better and gave you more resonsive lower frequence.

As i said i dont judge people having them. I just happen to think that a decent headunit, component set up front, amp to run the speakers. decent 12/10" sub and 130mm rear speakers (for rear fill) is the best set up for me. In my demo car i have phase evolution audio. Audiophile front components, opus 150.2 amp. Aliante 12" flat sub and a opus 500.1 amp running that, and 13cm phase rear speakers. Totally set up for sq, but sounds fantastic.

i know most peole dont want to send that kind of cash on audio. Put it this way the sub is £500 alone, i think the whole set retails at about £2000 (not including headunit). You can still get a decent sound with a budget install if you spend the time setting it up. Each peron has a different take on how they like there music to sound. We're all different, thats whats makes each install unique.

Rite my subs are all installed but i came across one problem!.... What wire do i attach the remote on/off cable to? I had connected it to a grey one going to the back of the headunit but it turns out that its a permenant live! What colour has every one else used?

i have to agree 6x9 are rubbish to people looking for the professional sounds quality but they do add a bit of base into your car which is the desired effect everyone is after

And as for the remote cable for your amp. Most after market headunits will have a blue wire. Use this to content to your amp.
