Progress Thread N.o 2: VTS time!

VTS DAY 1:

I’ve owned my VTS since March 08, and I thought id gradually get you all up to speed with how its changed in the last 6 months. Well, it all started when I turned 19 and decided that although I loved my old westy, it was time to move on after owning it since I was 17. I had made a decision early on that I wanted to get a VTS so it was just a case of finding the right one. It had to be below 50k, mk2, preferable black, and 02reg or newer. I eventually found: Citroen Saxo - 1.6 16v VTS, Black, 02reg, 40k on the clock, 1 previous owner FSH, all the VTS refinements, plus it was totally standard. I was pretty chuffed with it tbh, but it was all the was up in Newcastle, so being down in Kent I decided to book a flight up there and if I was happy with it id simply drive it back down. Luckily when I saw it in person it was pretty mint and everything was as described. It was advertised for £3100 but I managed to get it down to £2900 and seeing as I had £3500 to spend I was a very happy bunny! So off I set on what was to be a fun journey. This was the first time id ever driven a VTS (as well as the first time id actually sat in one!) and what a difference it was to my little 1.4! It pulled nicely in every gear and the power difference in the rev range took a bit of getting used too. I’m quite used to long journeys as I do 60 miles a day to and from work and I knew that in my 1.4 sitting at 70-80ish in 5th kept the revs between 3 - 3.5k whereas in the VTS 70-80 in 5th is at 3.5 - 4k and it sometimes felt that I needed to change up a gear - that was quite strange at first but then again the TU5JP4 is a higher revving engine. The handling was great and the VTS air bagged seats were loads more comfy than my westy ones and held you in more, plus they weren’t hideous with yellow piping lol. Another quite noticeable factor was the fuel economy which was obviously worse than in the 1.4 but hey ho! 300+ miles later and I was home admiring my new purchase.

I fitted standard GB style plates to freshen it up a bit, and also gave it a little clean:

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x210/andy_e_2007/VTS/S6.jpg

Lowered + Subtle Changes:

First things first - ride height. The standard saxo suspension is far too high for my liking, so ordering my full suspension kit was high on the agenda. The suspension I decided to get was the Spax 60mm kit consisting of front springs and shocks and rear shocks... these were fitted by Motowise in Hampshire after reading a few recommendations on here. I also fitted set of aero wipers which are a nice touch and I think they perform better than standard wipers too. FCS was fast approaching and luckily my sax was at the standard I wanted it to be in for the show.

GTI leathers:

Id been hunting for a decent set of GTI half leathers since I owned the VTS, and after not having much luck, I finally came across a good set of airbagged GTI leathers from dave_m (cheers fella)

After a trip to and from Birmingham, it was a case of old with the old, in with the new!

As for the vtr badges, I think the westcoast badges look pap + It tied in with the VTR Replica theme I went for when first modding it, along with vtr alloys etc...

Plans will be more subtle changes and performance upgrades: 266mm gti brakes, sport gear linkages, GE quick shift, strut brace etc :y:

Show cage fitted + more subtle changes:

I thought the interior could so with livening up a bit so I bought a show cage. It was a bit of a pig to fit at first, and I was worried about it digging into my leathers, but eventually it went in with no worries.

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x210/andy_e_2007/VTS/193ff061.jpg

Also purchased a bonnet bra from the group buy on here, I know there marmite but I quite like them and they can be whipped on and off in a flash anyway. I also customised some clear jewel rears into euro style ones.

My tyres were wearing out abit on the front, so I decided to buy some brand new Toyo TR1 all round ;)

The cage is surprisingly light so it doesnt really make any difference, and ive taken my spare wheel out which helps!

Deffinately doing engine/performance mods! im 50/50 on camming it though, I do 60ish miles a day for work so I need it to be practical (engine wise anyway lol)

Quick shift + Gear Linkages:

Small update - Thought the gear change could do with being more selective and less sloppy so I got some X-sport gear linkages and also a GE Quickshift, both have made a decent difference so would deffinately recommened :y:

Also got a powerflex lower engine mount as I thought the standard one could do with replacing...

Smoked Angels & Side repeaters:

I finally got round to getting my new toyo tyres fitted, and a week later I took the deliveries of some smoked angels along with a xenon bulb upgrade, and also some smoked side repeaters.

The angels were quite easy to fit although I did snap a clip or two on the plastic trim thats under the light, I had some spares clips though :A:

Dimma Grill:

Id been deciding whether to do something DIY with my original grill, or to get a dimma grill and potentially smooth it in to the bonnet. I ended up buying a dimma grill from CJ_Saxo (cheers bud!) It was already black and came with the mesh too, totally transformed the front end. I don’t think ill be smoothing it in as it looks good as it is but we’ll see...

PS - It needs a clean so excuse the dirtyness!

New exhaust system:

With all the exterior changes taking place nicely, I thought it was about time I invested in a new exhaust system! After a lot of thought over which setup id prefer, I ended up getting a magnex de-cat (just before they went bust!), Supersprint centre section and a piper 3.5” inwardly rolled back box…

Wheels respayed + New pics:

After thinking about whether to buy some new alloys or respray mine, I decided to respray them. I wanted to get them done before trax 08 which was one week away so I started prepping the wheels asap. After a trip to halfords for various sand papers, primer, paint and laquer, the wheels were finished and ready to put on the day before trax 08 which was more than lucky as I didn’t fancy going up there with steelies…

No during pics im afraid but heres what the wheels turned out like, im quite happy with them. Oh and my new exhaust system is on!!

Cleaned! + New pics:

Not updated this in a while due to a few issues with my PC not working properly, all is ok now though! Not a lot has changed over the last couple of months apart from de-wipering it and having a full service carried out by citroen as well as a cambelt change, so its running silky smooth :y: I have also been keeping it clean and in good order :)

Heres a pic of the "S" at its dirtyest around late Feb, Dirty as Feck! lol I have now got back in to routinely cleaning the car so it wont be in this kind of state again (till next winter at least)

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x210/andy_e_2007/VTS/Image005.jpg

Cleaned using two bucket method with a meggys wash mitt and Autoglym shampoo, dried with megs water magnet then polished with Autoglym SRP. Wheels were finished with Mer wheel wax and tyres were dressed with megs hot shine (applied with a brush)

New Discs and Pads + Bra-less pics:

Well after much consideration on whether to get a 266mm brake setup or not, I decided to go for a standard 247mm setup...but uprated of course ;) Not really looking to go track mad just yet so these should suite for the time being.

Settled for 247mm grooved Mintex discs all round with Mintex pads to match, and recently took delivery of them :A:

These were fitted pretty much straight away I and I must say these are a deffinate improvement over the standard items - healthy stopping power and no squeeling :y:

Here are a few pics of the S which I took a few months ago whilst the bra was off:

What do we think - bra on or off ???

Few more bits and pieces to do before FCS but I think all should be done in time.

Next bits are painting the calipers, lacquering my euro style lights for better durability and getting my VTS wheels powdercoated as my DIY job is starting to look a bit tatty lol

New Pics (FCS) and pre show clean:

Better late than never! Ive only just got round to uploading the few pics that were taken of my car at FCS. The dust was a joke so im glad a few were taken before it got badly coated! Ive never had to wash my car so many times in one weekend before!

Anyway heres the pics of the results from the pre show clean up and prep:
