I am thinking of gettin rid of my 99 saxo vtr for sumthing a bit more modern. Thinking of maybe getting an MG ZR 2.0 TDI. Just want to know are they a good car? They are pretty cheap and in my opinion look pretty good. Any thoughts?

I rather get the 1.4 model tbh, they got 105BHP which is not bad.

probably be more worth while sticking with the most common 1.4 petrol lump mate :) 105bhp is way under powered especially for a 2l tdi lump :).

I thought the 2.0 tdi was 115bhp? Are rovers really a bad car though? I was originally thinkin of gettin a golf gti but they are way over priced. Any other suggestions for me to get? Thinkin of spending about 3-4k but need something with low enough insurance, no higher that group 11.

People fuck me off its not just a rover with a bodykit go do your homework, the chassis has been strengthened, stiffened etc.....diff sus.
There good mate map to around 140bhp go for it dont let tossers on here that no nothing tell you otherwise.

I was told that the 2L Diesel ones don't suffer with the head gasket failure thing. So if i was to buy one that'd be the version i'd get :y:

Emm get it right people
The headgaskit on the petrol models is shit
I used have the 2.0 TD when it first came out in yellow.. I loved it back then 2001 I got it. Really decent diesel engine with plenty of poke, I played with the acuator to make it a little quick
They look ok with the 17's and are rather cheap
If you find a decent one buy it

I read a good few reviews and think i mite go for the 1.4 + model. Could the head gasket go even if they are relatively new, ie 2005 with under 40000 miles?

Oh yes they can

i heard the heads are common upto about 30k... but one at around 50k is more likely to have had it done already... just check the history.. it might have already been done then you shouldnt have to worry for a while... the diesel engines are a strong enough engine imo :)

3 people I know have had the zr160, and all had the headgasket issue. Werent that quick either. My bro had one, and it was new, <10k on the clock and it still happened to that.
I'd stay well away if i were you. I did 70k in my old VTR with no issues what so ever.

Think im gonna go for the diesel model. The head gasket seems to be a major issue in the petrol models from what ive read. Thanks for the opinions people :y:

fkvtr - believe me get a 160 you will not get a prob on the facelifts they used a uprated gasket so they wont go, plus check if its been done as alot of garages now replace with a steel headgasket to avoid it happening again aswell :)

mum has had the same rover for 7 years not once has it had a engine problem! tbh no a few ppl with zr and seen plenty of reviews and there all good news! people just alwaays follow opinions on a failed company but tbh the compoany does not reflect on the car

Why would the gasket go pop if the car is looked after?
The only people that complain about this problem are young people on forums... I'm assuming because they thrash them to death then expect reliability of a Honda?

I would get a 160 only prob is that the insurance wud kill me! Any other signs of headgasket failure that i should look out for when buying, apart from the 'mayo' on the oil cap?

1.4 versions go like hell with a few mods.
My mates family owns a rover/mg garage. His younger brother has a face lift 25 with a few zr goodies. Its got the 160 throttle body, induction kit, stainless 4-1 manifold and decatted system. Used to sit on the arse of his brothers 160 untill the speed limiter kicked in at 122mph, which is a bit gay
