bad rattleing noise at low revs????

when i get into 4th and 5th at about 40ish i get a deep sounding rattling noise and i dont have a clue what it is all i know is that its coming from the engine bay or around that area. it cant be the exhaust as i had it checked over wen it had a hole, but would anyone know wot this noise could be

when you rev it out of gear, does it rattle?

I know in my mates 106 gti, he had a strangle rattle coming from his engine, A spark plug was loose.
