View Full Version : Reputation System & Thread Tagging

All,

I'm sorry to announce that due to continual misuse and abuse, after a lengthy staff debate some changes have been made to two elements of the Saxperience Community this evening: -

Thread tagging - now only staff members can utilise this function
User reputation system - this has now been disabled

The thread tagging option is a relatively new feature, which has been abused by certain individuals (who will remain un-named, for now). Well done guys - you've done the community proud. (not!)

The reputation system has been in use for a number of years. Several attempts have been made to stop members from abusing this system, but once again, some people can't resist. The reputation system has real value, but only if used constructively. Far too many people chose to abuse this system, or abuse other members via the reputation system.

The number of new members who have received masses of negative reputation for the slightest 'noob' type post has got much worse of late - these members have little chance of being able to recover their reputation score in a reasonable time frame, so the system gets ignored (by them). If a system can only be utilised by longer standing members, then its not that great a system is it. Once again - well done to the rep abusers. The system has been disabled due to YOUR actions.

On many occasions I've urged members to use the reputation system constructively. On many occasions I've also said that 'we' shall persist with the reputation system and make it work. I don't like going back on my word and I'll make it clear now that I would prefer to be removing problem members from the community than removing functions, which can be useful to the community users!

Let this be a gentle warning to the spammers and abusers of this community. You know who you are... I know who you are.

I'd just hit triple figures too =(

Personally, I try to post in the help sections, partly because of the reputation system.. (Not just because of that, of course).. However.. knowing your posts and help are appreciated..

I don't like going back on my word and I'll make it clear now that I would prefer to be removing problem members from the community than removing functions, which can be useful to the community users!

I know this is a pretty bold move.. but if so, why haven't the problem members been removed? You have infraction capabilities.. banning.. warning..

bright but not flashy :err:

i'm willing to compromise.

nah but in seriousness i sometimes used the rep system to judge wither it would be a good idea to buy something from someone etc but if it was being abused i suppose that ruins my plan lol

plus someone left me bad rep recently jus sayin jew .... wtf is that

Simo
6th October 2008, 22:45
not a fan of this simo...

neg rep.

I expect all of the rep-whores to be un-impressed.

Likewise, I expect many of the people who the rep whores abused to be happy with the move.

I cant please everyone, but at the end of the day I have to be happy with the community I started off and the continual rep abuse was getting pathetic.

There have been plenty of chats, warnings, infractions going around about rep abuse. Peeps ignore, the next step is taken.

Sorry...

Simo
6th October 2008, 23:01
its all the same surely....why does the rep system mean so much to the member and why do the mods care so much about the abuse?

If you look at both points of view, you can see why the system has been removed. The mods get dozens and dozens of rep removal requests every day.

Generally only negative rep abuse gets looked into, but when you start looking, theres an awful lot of people good repping 'mates', which makes the system worthless.

The system has been abused to such an extent that its meaningless.

new bars look shit, no offence.

when they first came about it was obvious that the admin really wanted them, everyone kicked up a fuss so they went away, for a while. now rep disappears for one reason or another and this bar system mysteriously comes back...

If the mods cant keep up with the requests then get more staff. e.g. me....

shooorn94
6th October 2008, 23:05
but surely with no rep people wont bother with photochops as much or be as helpfull as they get nothing out of it..

I can see this being a problem, those with the knowledge sometimes only posted if they knew they were going to get something out of it. I once posted a thread in the saxo problems section and got no response till I mentioned +rep for any reply that helps.

Personally I agree with agent vip... i didn't give a damn about the rep system really until I noticed it's real uses. It helped me identify the spam whore from the useful bloke, and complete rep mad chap. I would have personally banned those from using the rep system altogether if they abused it.

I realise it is a lot of work sorting out each and every moany so and so who receives bad rep. But if you find a way of predefining bad rep for example, clicking bad rep >> "why do you wish to bad rep this person" >> a set list of reasons (abusing other members of the community, being unhelpful, spamming unnecesarily etc.)

Maybe bump the premium price up to sort this problem out, or only have rep for those with premium?

It has probably all been discussed already but I hope you've made the right choice simo.

Anywho... any chance of an explanation on the new levels and things? :y:

When i sell buy or consiser buying i take the rep into consideration, if they have masses of neg rep then i wont sell to them or buy, couse i wont trust them, if theyre all green then, i have more confidence with them. same with advice n stuff too. Danny = unhappy now :(:( lmao

Once this thread has run its course IF we decide to bring the rep system back it will only happen if all rep points are reset and much stricter rules are put in place.

Now its on posts and activity, which is a bit gay... doesn't even mean you're a good user.

Don't think I've ever neg repped anyone in the year I've been on here tbh. Don't see the need unless it waaaaay out of order, but then infractions etc should be issued.

My 10 cents...

I must have done over 20 sigs for people and many wheel chops etc. Was nice to get something back for the efforts. Also finding info/links for people etc and just being funny lol and making people laugh.

Now its on posts and activity, which is a bit gay... doesn't even mean you're a good user.

Don't think I've ever neg repped anyone in the year I've been on here tbh. Don't see the need unless it waaaaay out of order, but then infractions etc should be issued.

There's no rep on ClioSport either and its just got that boring, church feel to it... which is why I'm always back here for a laugh and to help people out with chops.

Nite nite people xxx

Just get them to suck you off at the next meet like you did viper

Now we can see the people who are really a value to this community as opposed to those who sit there talking shite and spaming all day :D. It was getting annoying being judged by my reputation points and low post count but all that has changed now, 582 posts and level 13. Compare that to some of the old rep/spam whore's and i think my point is proven.
We will also see the return of freedom of speach. In other words all those who lived in fear of speaking their mind's due to the rep abuse will be able to have a say. How many times did we see people being neg repped to death by the rep whores for speaking their mind ? I think there are going to be some big changes in the next few days :D

exactly, the forum i used to be on before this was a music one, and theyre general chat was amazing, nothing ever got locked, it went on for pages n pages and it was a thirving community, most user was online at one time was 996 or sumthing.

the only threads that should get locked here should be the repeated q's one such as avatars etc.

Report moderator abuse to admin if you have a problem with something someone has done. General chat is not frowned upon, but sometimes people take threads too far and people complain - sometimes threads then got locked or deleted. Other times, blatant crap deserves to be moderated.

I know what you mean about the mods on power trips, one in particular, not a problem with the rest, never had

I see what you mean about the sense of humour, but I see it as an aquired taste, too many newbies come on here without a clue who people are, how they act etc etc

mods do vary...some are cool and let things flow, and then some do think they are god and will try their hardest to get a pat on the head from simo...

and reporting mods to mods aint really my thing...

but i think you should let mods know they need to let the banter be, give them guidelines and make sure they stick to them...

eg. chris, is a decent mod...usually joins in banter and always gives a generall warning before slapping a lock on...

where as ryan, doesnt join in the banter and doesnt warn when threads go of track...he locks the threads with a smug comment...

i dont mean like that mate. I mean for example, when i very first joined saxp, i got neg repped for asking what style driving poeple had if they were economical or a speeding loonatic.

Noobs who get neg repped for that such as talking about racing and driving like prats, will get the forum a bad name, and a bad image for saxo owners.

But if the noobs cant get repped will 500 posts then any thread they do make, they can get wanred by other poeple, so they dont do it again.

I got neg repped a fair bit when i first joined, then tunred it around with helping out making guides etc, with the odd neg rep such as "poeple cant help if theyre spotty" when i made a comment that mcy d's workers are spotty.

i dont know where im going with this, probs dosent even make sense lol, im tired Sorry.

I agree, but its often not as simple as that. Whilst a group of you may be having a laugh about something, someone else may be complaining about your chit-chat. A mod has to weigh up both sides... and take action. Both sides wont be happy dependant on the mod's decision.

When it comes to giving people like you shit then yeah neg rep was the killer but i allways came up with the goods when it was needed. All your rep whore friends would be able to take away what bit of rep i had in one go. Seeing as rep was used to judge people back then i had to be carefull, a few red blobs could make or break a person and i had a reputation to up-hold ;).

<Serious Paul>

Right i can see why you have removed the reputation system. (*cough* Jaybiss complaining about noobs getting bad repped and leaving the site *cough*). Personally i believe "if something is broke then you should fix it", along with "if something isn't broke you shouldn't fix it. " What i dont believe is "If something is broke, delete it."

In your staff chat (in the section the normal members can't get in) what other options did you think of? Or did you think of just deleting it as an easy option? (no offence there, i know you and other staff have put in alot of solid work to get this site to where it is today).

Right firstly, Lets just weigh up the good and bad of the rep system.

GOOD
> It teaches newbies a lesson, those who are serious about learning about saxo's and really want help will ignore it, carry on posting and build it back up. This gets rid of the timewasters that come on here to enquire about electric superchargers, ebay chips etc.

> It helps when buying an item. Ok we still got the iTrader... But the first thing i personally used to look at when selling/buying was the persons rep. If its red its obvious they're not going to be as good a trader as someone with green.

> It actually helps moderators do their job. Ok you said it makes more work for them. What would be harder, going through every thread made looking for trouble makers, or getting pm's off people (who think they've been wrongly repped) with links to the threads where there might be trouble and bad rep has been given?

> It makes some people want to help others as they know they'll get something back out of it. Wether its general advice or photoshops. With the rep system removed i think you'll see alot less people doing photoshops for people and offering good advice.

> It helps moderate the forums. When used correctly normal members such as myself can give good or bad rep to someone. For minor rule breaking such as text talk sometimes a bit of bad rep is all thats needed, instead of an infraction off a moderator.

BAD POINTS
> Number one has to be abusing the rep system.

> Extra work for moderators sorting out the abuse.

Conclusion
Surely the good outweighs the bad. Instead of deleting the whole thing i think you should work with the communtity and ask how we can solve the bad points.

Other options
Option 1 Delete the bad rep, and just have positive rep
Most people, if not all, who complain is about bad rep. I can't see you getting many people complaining about positive rep. So you could have positive rep only? So just one button for approve, instead of approve or disapprove.

Advantages

> This would keep the spam whores happy as they would carry the great forum banter going (which isn't as good on many other car forums).

> It would keep the noobs with no rep happy as they can only improve. If they do something wrong i'm sure the longterm members will have a little go at them and they'll learn from their mistakes.

> It would keep the helpful members out such as people who offer advice in the Engine and Performance, Interior and Styling, etc. As they will still get rewarded for their advice.

> This option would keep photoshopp'ers happy as they will still be getting rewarded for their photoshops.

Disadvantages

> The negative rep system gets rid of all the noobs who just sign up, make a thread or two, make some trouble, rip some people off, ask how to turbo their 1.1 then crash their car and never come back. Them kind of people.

> The neg rep system is like a moderator power for the proper saxp community. Which saves the moderating team a big job. For example its a punishment that us normal daily users can use to punish members for texttalk, spamming etc. Which saves the proper moderators sorting through loads of text looking for texttalkers etc.

Option 2 Different Levels Of Rep (my favourite option tbh)

Explaination
Ok simo i know you love your bars, and im not talking about the ones in town. These level bars that you love and most people on here dont.. How about mixing this idea with the idea of rep. May be hard to code tho :\. I'm thinking of when you click to rep someone you should pick an option what the rep is for. Such as:
http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd172/Paul_CGM/my%20pics/suggestion1.jpg

Then you have two options. Get rid of the "leave negative rep" or improve it simular to above with options such as "Not funny" "Not Helpful" ETC. It may stop unneccasary badrep. Personally i think might be good idea just to get rid of the leave bad rep side. And just have the leave positive.

Then next to the user name, where you originally wanted to put the bars you could have a new set of bars representing what the user has rep for. Such as:
http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd172/Paul_CGM/my%20pics/suggestion2.jpg

Advantages of this:
> You get to keep you gay bars :homme: :p

> People wont be asking mods to remove bad rep because it wont be there (if you chose to get rid of it all together).

> Will be more detailed and helpful rep. If you chose to upgrade the neg rep system then it will give an indication as to why they've been bad repped (easy to spot abuse for moderators).

Disadvantages
> The saxp community hate bars under their name.

Option 3 Employ Tupps

Make tupps a moderator and get him to deal with all of the abuse of rep system.

Advantages
> No more anoying mail for other moderators

> Problem solved.

Disadvantages

> Saxp would turn into a rep warzone.

Option 4 Add a rep report button
Explaination
To save emails/pms that the mods get you could add a report button in the user control panel next to the rep comments. This could be set up simular to the report button in threads/posts (damn that things slow though lol).

Once bad rep has been reported it can be stored in some kind of table along with the comment as why rep was left. Once a week one member of staff could view the table and simply delete the ones with no good reasons by ticking or unticking a checkbox. Then at end of the table simply click submit and all sorted. Such as:

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd172/Paul_CGM/my%20pics/suggestion3.jpg

Right i'm too tired to write anymore. You get the idea though. Hope this helps.

i think the Rep system should be inactive in certain boards

ie Jokes, General and similar.

It should be a "thanks for technical knowledge" system.

Not "OMG YOUZ GOT JOKES FROM SICKIPEDIA" lololololz

My 2 cents.

NickB
7th October 2008, 01:21
Like option 2 alot paul that was another issue with the rep

coopner and pred are amongst the most helpful guys on here

rem and adz are amongst the funniest

so different type of rep indicates why they have been repped.... fantastic idea

titchster
7th October 2008, 01:21
From the small time i've spent on this site, I've seen rep being abused, and used properly, but on the other hand, I've seen it used appropriately too, plus it helps to filter out the trouble makers, example, someone comes along with loads of neg rep, you know that the chances are, they're gonna come along with some random shite, if they've got lots of good rep, you know they're an established member, and are likely to come out with something appropriate.

I preferred it with rep. :(

paul.... go away.

I quite liked the rep system actually... although i have to admit i would rep people simply for making me roar with laughter.
but then again that does earn rep in my eyes haha.
I think the bars that Simo mentioned right at the start of the thread is a good shout. Really does look horribly bare over to the left.

I'm over the moon with this decision as it will stop people sending us mods PM's asking if we could change the bad reps they had received etc...... Nice one Bigman!!!
