Go Nikon..
I have one and its great..Also in head to head tests, Nikon models produce less "noise" in dark pictures than Canons..Also Nikons are very comfortable to hold etc, i held a Canon a while back and it felt all square and horrible..
Just my view..

get either canon or nikon. The others make really great cameras but their lenses are so expensive and limited in choice that you're pretty screwed if you want to up your kit. Canons are better at the budget end, but nikon are sweeter high end.
Best thing is to try both and see which one you like. Don't be swayed by what others say, they'll no doubt plug their own system brand and
Not actually have a clue about the rival systems and their features
Really you want to budget most of your cash on flashes and lenses, decent body last. Not really much point in only having one lens on it. Ads

you have got it wrong james. Its only the newer expensive models where nikon have finally sorted the issue with noise. Old cheap models even iso 800 have silly noise compaired to the equivilent canon.
if on a budget espec second hand id sway canon, although if feeling flas from a start the new nikon sisytems are very impressive.

I'm looking at getting the Sony Alpha A200 DSLR soon. It's £299.
It will be my first decent camera, as I've always had point 'n' shoot digital ones.

hope you don't plan on getting extra lenses for it...
nice cheap body... but if you want to go a bit further with your photography then welcome to wallet-abuse central.

How much are we talking then for extra lenses?
I know there's a 75-300mm one. Would that be the only other one I would need?
The camera comes with 18-70mm lens.

personally i wouldnt touch the sony alpha, its their first real dip into the digital slr real and lenses are not cheap and due to them not being common second hand stuff doesnt pop up often.
canon best for any newbie imo, as better less noise in high iso at cheap end cameras and alot of people having canons that sell lenses etc...

just to add to what ryan has said... the second generation of the sony alpha is a beauty... but as said, the standard lenses (which are Zeiss) cost loads and loads and loads... effectively you'll have a great body but a shite lens and then have to splash £500 minimum to get another semi decent lens. Like Don im going to sound like a broken record but make your first purchase into the world of DSLR very carefully... because unless you're loaded or don't mind taking an equipment hit, it's pretty difficult to switch systems. You've got to consider the entire package what you'll buy and what is available to you when you want to push your photography that little bit further. Failure to research it properly and you're either limiting yourself or blowing a whopping amount of cash for not much benefit.

iirc the sony was the first camera with the anti dust vibration system for the sensor of the new generation of dslrs.... its just the compatibility which screws sony up as they could so easily have used a better fitment range.

Very nearly ended up buying a Sony dslr...but after above comments and a chat with my mate who is a semi pro photographer...i decided to buy a canon 450d...it was a little over budget but i'm happy with it. Even got given a extra lens from my mate...bonus...!!
