the current legal requirement is with the seller to put the postcode/address, not the buyer, u can just get round tht by ordering show plates that look like normal plates but without the shitty addy on bottom

After the 1st November If your number plate is not to the MOT test standard ie. The NEW laws on reg plates then you are liable to prosicution, fine, confiscation of the said plates & if you own private plates then you stand loseing that reg aswell.

its always been illegal to show a plate with a logo unless its a gb flag etc, its also always been law to have the postcode and bs mark on number plates, just its recently became more strict. i got a fine through the door from a speed camera van about the plates on my astra as they had the irmscher logo at the side. the law that starts on the 1st of nov is against actually making show plates. as of next month nobody is allowed to make a reg plate unless its all done the legal way with logbook etc present. and in correct font and layout

TIPSY
17th October 2008, 22:31
if they have a logo there still not legal. my irmscher ones where from demon plates, ended up costing me £60 :(

Got new legal plates today & just fitting them!

On the back on my old plates it says 'Sold as a Show Plate - Not for Road use'

I bought the car back in March with them on & had no idea I was illegal!!!! hehe

All sorted now tho

Does this ONLY apply to number plates manufactured in England?

The reason I ask is that I get (or used to get) my plates from Ritchie (plates4all/plates2u) and it wasn't law that the location/postcode had to be on the plates if there were made in Scotland.

Therefore, if this "new" law only applies to number plates manufactured in England, then that's fine :)

As far as I'm aware it will be the law full stop. Police are starting to stop & fine people & if your car is newer than I think Sept 2001 your number plates have to have place of make & the British Standards number on them or it will be an MOT failer after I believe 1 November 2008.

DVLA and DVA are calling on all number plate suppliers in Scotland and Northern Ireland to register with the Agencies before 1st November 2008. Those who continue to supply a number plate after that date without being registered risk a fine of up to £5,000 and/or suspension from the register. This follows the extension to Scotland and Northern Ireland of regulations governing the supply of number plates, which previously only applied in England and Wales.

While it is already an offence across the UK for motorists to display non-compliant number plates on their vehicles, as of 1st November 2008 it will become an offence to supply number plates that do not comply with the Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001. Some number plate suppliers already advise their customers that non-compliant number plates cannot be used on the road and are for display purposes only, however, it will now be an offence to supply non-compliant number plates irrespective of any advice given.

Basically, number plate suppliers have to register with the agencies before the 1st November to prevent a fine of up to £5,000. However, suppliers have approx. three months to become registered.

From 1st November 2008 it will become an offence to supply number plates that do not comply with the road vehicles act (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001. There is a maximum penalty of £2,500 and/or suspension from the register for up to 5 years. This offence will apply throughout the United Kingdom.

So it seems it's the suppliers that will be peanalised and not the car owner? Surely for these suppliers to become registered, if they don't conform to the regulations, then at the MOT, you'll be given an advisory as opposed to a straight fail?

And also... I'm assuming this new law does not apply to number plates supplied BEFORE the 1st November 2008?

I've a 2002 saxo on a 51 plate & the guy that did my new plates yesterday looked at my plates & said the were illegal the day they were put on the car & the MOT guy last week told me that my car would fail next year if I didn't get new plates.

I'm just quoting what I have been told.

I'm legal now so won't get stopped & fined by the police & all ready for next years MOT

It seems very confusing of what is right & wrong but it's a warning to everyone to be careful as since I didn't know my plates were illegal how many other people don't realise too!

Bollocks to that.

I have correct lettering and spacing, everything is normal and readable like Peej's is but also without a name and postcode of whoever made the plates.

As far as ill be concerned i bought the car with these plates on and if the Government wish me to replace them then they can pay for it.

I see absolutely no benefit of having a company name and postcode on there.

People may say it prevents simple copying of number plates etc but at the end of the day if someone wants to go to the hassle of cloning a numberplate and break the law then they may aswel track down a similar car and just nick the plates off them for free.

Pointless law entirely

DevilDamo

Peejous... Mine look like that too. They're like SOOO illegal. It's pathetic.

Think its going to be a case when you MOT your cars just see what happens!

I've been driving around with what they call show plates since I bought the car back in March as they were on the car. No-one told me they were illegal & luckily didn't get stopped by the police at all.

I'm only quoting what the MOT guy said. His words were 'You will have to get new number plates for next years MOT as it will fail as they haven't got the suppliers name, postcode or the British Standards number on them plus you can't have emblems other than GB & you have Saxo'

My new GB plates cost £18 for the pair so not too bad on cost too replace rather than what I believe a £60 fine!
