View Full Version : When to grow up, car wise

Bit of a long read here, my bad lol.

Been thinking a lot about what car I want recently, I love the saxo it such a laugh to drive and it handles so well, also got it stripped out pretty heavily with no cards carpet and roof lining etc, problem is its only a 1-4, so the original plan was to upgrade to 16v next summer, and eventually look at bodies etc. I want to get into doing regular track days too,

But now Im thinking that even though it would be a fairly rapid car, for a 20 year old anyway, and even more so with the bodies, i keep thinking its still gonna be a cheap car with reasonably low build quality, eg plastic arches and cheap feel in some areas. And Ive really been looking at DC2 tegs. Both the cars and the insurance are pretty cheap now. And obviously theyre track machines as standard, and handle stupidly well aswell as being well built. And theyre just more grown up than saxos?

One final thing that messes my head up again is that my 1-4 lump is on 82k now, so by the time i sell it the car will be worthless because of the engine. Whereas if I buy a VTS/GTi lump for say 300-500 quid, and then fit it myself as I would do anyway that would surely at least add the value the engine cost me back onto the car as one its now a VTS and two its got much lower mileage.

Sorry if you had to read all that, but opinions would be cool lol. Cheers

Get whatever girl you want, because if you don't you'll still want it and regret the choice tbo.

DC2 would be a good move tbh... but spending time and effort on the Sax has the 'hobby' and satisfaction factor.

I'd say go for the DC2 unless you plan big for the 16v lump

Girl? See where your coming from though mate, tis a fair point.

Cheers man, thats true, the teg would cost more to modify too which removes a lot of the hobby thing as it takes longer i spose.

Can you see my logic with the whole engine coversion thing making more money back than I would have had, or am I being optimistic?

Yeah I suppose, but you won't make back what you put into it... so think long and hard about chucking serious cash tuning it. Ie; will having a 16v tb'd Saxo make you keep it long enough for you to get your moneys worth out of it?

Also think of the reliability... DC shouldn't have anything serious go wrong, while a tuned up S engine is more likely to break, unless you uprate everything.

Yeah definately more reliable going Jap anyway, let alone heavily modding it. Thinking if I just plain 16v it and leave it, I can see if its gonna be enough base power for me long term, if it isnt I can sell it, get the money I would have got for it before I converted plus whatever I spent as that would have been added on anyway and buy a teg without losing out. But that seems a little bit to simple to actually work lol
