I am about to buy a new car tonight, a Saxo VTS mk2.
When i went to look at it i noticed it had a very noisey engine when driving, the bloke kept mention it was the cambelt... due to it not having it changed yet.
i was wondering if anyone could give me pointers to other reasons why it may be nosiey.
i am going to get the cambelt and water pump changed if i get it, i just want to make sure i am making the right desision due to my last vehicle being a bad buy.

thanks

A cambelt change being overdue would not cause extra noise from the engine, unless it's almost hanging off, which I doubt because the car just wouldn't run properly.

The noise could be from a number of areas but it is obviously difficult to say without hearing it. If you are serious about buying it I would recommend getting an experienced mechanic to have a look over it as the noise could be internally, which would mean alot of work to repair it.

cam belt is rather expensive to change, could be the tappets? like said before mechanic or someone who knows what there listening for is best to take a look at the engine.
