JDM CIVIC - 1.6 VTEC

Well as usual an outrageous delay with the write-up. It was almost 2 weeks ago that I done this car. It belongs to a friend of mine and at the early part of the year had a B16 dropped in it. Which I must say is mega fast for just being a 1.6. The car looked decent from a distance, but has NOT been well looked after! I'm sure my pal won't disagree here. We had a local cruise at the end of the week and he's also looking to sell it.

So onto the detail. This was done over the course of 3 evenings after (and during:p) work.

DAY 1

Was brought up to me on the Monday night, looking pretty sorry for itself... Good layer of winter road grime covering the car.

This is what it looked like...

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2318.jpg

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2323.jpg

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2327.jpg

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2328.jpg

As you can see, the car was pretty bad. The only upside is that all this muck was hiding the array of defects and dents underneath it! You'll see what I mean later in the post!

The wheels, being white, were pretty black but we had taken them off a couple weeks previous to give them a thorough clean and put some PB Wheel Sealant on. So I wasn't to worried about getting them cleaned up.

Products used on the wheels were:

AS Smart Wheels 1:8
APC on Tyres and Arches
A variety of brushes

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2329.jpg http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2330.jpg

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2331.jpg http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2332.jpg

After this it was onto the foaming. Done using my spray attatchment and CG Maxi Suds with a bit of APC to loosen up the dirt. Pressure washer packed in at the weekend :wall:

So sprayed on, left to dwell for 5 minutes whilst I went round all the panel gaps, badges, etc with the Megs Slide Lock brush.
Then rinsed.

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2333.jpg

I let my pal feel a involved by doing the rinsing :p

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2334.jpg

Then it was onto the wash stage:

2 Bucket Method with CG Maxi Suds
2 Lambswool mitts
1 MF Mitt

The car had all the door, boot shuts cleaned. And then rinsed...

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2336.jpg

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2337.jpg

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2339.jpg

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2342.jpg

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2344.jpg

After rinsing, we soaked the lower panels in AS Tardis to remove the tar. This was left for a couple minutes and then wiped off with a MF. This had to be done a couple of times on more stubborn spots.

As you can see the car has never seen any protection as the water just sat on the paint. No beading whatsoever...

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2343.jpg

But a marked improvement already! :thumb:

Then it was rolled inside to be clayed.

Products used were:

3 of us (Roped them into it!)
A mix of CG Maxi Suds and water in a spray bottle
Superfine yellow polyclay
A lot of patience

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2350.jpg

This left the paint feeling a LOT smoother and the colour was brought out more. As this car has never been clayed before, never mind detailed.

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2351.jpg http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2352.jpg

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2354.jpg

Out of all the panels, the boot and rear bumper were by far the worst. With some pretty bad contamination.

So after claying, it was back outside for a final wash. Same process as above and then rinsed.

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2356.jpg

The car was then brought inside for the last time!

Dried off using:

AS Tango as drying agent.
Miracle Dryer to soak up initially. (Pat & Lift technique)
Waffleweave Towel to dry excess and then shuts, sills, etc.

This left us with this...

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2360.jpg

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2362.jpg

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_23641.jpg

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2367.jpg

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2368.jpg

As you can see, another improvement, but still FAR from the standard I was looking for. Even in normal light you can see that the finish is dull and flat. And the Carbon bonnet was looking pretty grey.

Now that the car was dried off and prepped up for polishing it was time to tape u the car...

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2369.jpg

Leaving us with a tasty colour scheme :p

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2370.jpg

5th November 2008, 14:51
By this point it was already getting late as we hadn't started the car until almost 5pm. But as usual, I was too tempted to just leave it at that. So decided to do a quick test patch on the Carbon Bonnet.

Prodcucts used were:

Megs G220
Initially tried Menz FF P106FF on a Sonus Finishing Pad
Stepped up to 2 drops of Menz FF P106ff, 1 drop IP 3.02 on a Megs Polishing pad
Polish was spread at speed 2.5
3-4 passes to break down polish at speed 4
8-10 passes at speed 5 to work polish

Before
http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2372.jpg

After
http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2376.jpg

This made a vast improvement, especially with the clarity of the CF weave coming through. Although there was still a few RDS remaining full correction wasn't the aim. Just an overall tidy up of the car.

So with a test patch done, how could I resist doing the rest of the bonnet :p I mean, I can't leave a job part done :p

So I cracked on...

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2379.jpg

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2380.jpg

You can really see the difference between the side of the bonnet that had been polished and the side that hadn't.

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2382.jpg

I went ahead and finished the bonnet which I was really impressed with as the weave really stands out now and the colour is begining to get good depth to it :buffer:

Under Halogens
http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2384.jpg

Under Normal Lighting
http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2385.jpg

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2386.jpg

So got everything ready for the following day, and tucked the car in the corner of the warehouse for the night.

But before I went, I noticed the exhaust looking sorry for itself and could not resist!

So I used:

Megs Nxt Metal Polish
First with fine wire wool
Then buffed
Then with an old MF
Then buffed off

Before & After
http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2387.jpg http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2388.jpg

So at around half 10 we called it a night!

DAY 2

This was to be a day of polishing. Managed to use some of my spare time during work to get on with it so I wouldnt be as rushed at night.

I started off on the passenger side rear arch. I tried a few combinations but I settled with the following:

Megs G220
Megs Polishing pad with 2 drops of Menz IP 3.02 and 1 drop of FF P08RD
Same polish used but Sonus SFX-1 spot pad for tighter areas.
The polish was again spread on speed 2.5
Broken down for 4-5 passes on speed 4
Then worked at speed 5 for 6-10 passes.
Worked down again to speed 4 for 2 passes to burnish the finish.

I settled on this polish choice of a mix due to not having much time to do all of the work so hoped to achieve a better finish and make it more workable with the FF added in.

Rear Quarter Panel Before & After
http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2389.jpg http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2391.jpg

And a 50/50
http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2392.jpg

Before & After
http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2394.jpg http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2396.jpg

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2398.jpg

And a reflection shot with half the rear panel done...

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2397.jpg

I then moved onto the Fuel Cap and Rear Pillar.

Before & After
http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2399.jpg http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2403.jpg

Before & After
http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2401.jpg http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2402.jpg

And another shot to show how crisp the reflection was now...

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2404.jpg

Now it was time to move onto the Passenger door. Same process used as above, although this was a bit harder. Again another panel with battle scars on it :p Which is a shame as it takes away from the end product.

The difference between Rear Quarter Panel and Door...
http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2408.jpg

Before & After on Passenger Door
http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2406.jpg http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2409.jpg

A Quick 50/50 & Finished
http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2410.jpg http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2412.jpg

The Lower Panels of the Door And Rear Quarter Panel were also done in the same way.

The passenger side of the roof was done in the same way but I got no pictures.

After this I moved onto the Front Quarter Panel which had a nasty scratch on it. As did a lot of the rest of the car :p So I wasn't going to spend much time concentrating on it as I could take the edges off it then using a Glaze try hide it later.

So Before
http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2419.jpg

And After...
http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2420.jpg http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2421.jpg

With the whole Passenger side now done I took a step back to take in the fruits of my labour...

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2425.jpg

No begining to make some progress. I moved onto the front bumper. This was tackled with a spot pad as it was a bit footery.

Before & After
http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2426.jpg http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2427.jpg

Then onto the drivers side which was pretty bad and required 2 hits to get it the same standard as the rest.

Before & During
http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2429.jpg http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2430.jpg

And After 1 Hit
http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2431.jpg

I then tackled the drivers side of the roof and again due to it being awkward I didn't get any pictures.

Moved onto the drivers door next, which was really badly swirled. (I sense the use of an automatic car wash!)

I tackled the lower panels first as my back was still holding out for now so thought I'd get it done before I get too sore to lean down!! Only 20 and already my backs done in!

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2436.jpg

And the door Before & 50/50(ish)
http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2434.jpg http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2437.jpg

Whilst I was doing this my mate showed up. So I thought I'd get him to start on the engine bay.
This started off like this:

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2440.jpg

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2442.jpg http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2441.jpg

Process as Follows:

Citrus APC on painted surfaces and plastics
Degreaser for metal and built up Gunk
Variety of brushes
Loads of MF's
Drill and Emery paper to remove black coating from Rocker Cover
Plastic Cover on Rocker removed to be sanded back and sprayed black

Branter33
5th November 2008, 14:53
My mate got cracking with the engine whilst I moved back to polishing and onto the rear Quarter Panel. The car was now looking like this...

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2443.jpg

Rear Quarter Before & After
http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2445.jpg http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2446.jpg

And the back end of the panel...

Before & After
http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2447.jpg http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2448.jpg

And 50/50 & Finished
http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2449.jpg http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2450.jpg

Now the whole driver side was finshed... Getting there now. :buffer::thumb:

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2452.jpg

I then moved onto the last stage of polishing on the boot. This was pretty bad, but from previous details I have done. I noticed that in my opinion the back makes the biggest diference to the overall apperance of the car when polishing.

So onto the correction....

Before & After
http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2453.jpg http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2454.jpg

And a quick 50/50 (ish) of the Bumper
http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2456.jpg

Now that the boot was finished it was time to stand back and take a well deserved break!

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2459.jpg

It was at this point that my girlfriend showed up with a sarny, some juice and some sweets to keep me going :thumb: Said I need to stop skipping dinner for detailing :p So she's looking after me!

Then after a quick bite to eat it was back to the detailing and whilst the tape was still on, I applied the Glaze.

Products Used:

Megs G220
Red Moose Glaze on a Sonus Finishing Pad
Spread on speed 2
Then worked in for 2-3 passes at speed 4

Taking us from this....
http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2460.jpg

To this...
http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2461.jpg

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2464.jpg

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2465.jpg

Then it was time once again to call it a night... Verging on half 11 this time. But who cares, its normal to stay up late, in work, detailing cars

Branter33
5th November 2008, 14:54
DAY 3

So day 3 began, the day before the cruise. So I was hoping to tie up all the loose ends and get a couple layers of protection on before the day finished. I didn't have much to do in work so took full advantage and got on with the car.

I started off by cleaning out any of the polishing dust that got into the door sills, shuts, etc. Then out came the Natty Paste Wax Blue.

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2467.jpg

This was applied via a German Apllicator to all the sills and door shuts.

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2468.jpg

This was left to cure whilst I applied the wax to the outside of the car, using a Clearkote MF applicator. Was left to cure whilst I applied a coat of PB Wheel Sealant and finished up the interior.

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2471.jpg

Wax On
http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2469.jpg

Wax Off
http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2470.jpg

So now with a nice coat of proection on it, the cars really beginng to look good...

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2473.jpg

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2476.jpg

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2477.jpg

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2478.jpg

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2479.jpg

So all the other processes are as follows:
Interior

Was hoovered and Wet Vac'd at the start
Hoovered again once dry
Plastics scrubbed down with APC when needed or water with MF
No dressing on the interor Plastics
Glass was done with Turtle Wax Glass Polish
Then Air freshener was AS Blast Citrus

Exterior

Wheels recieved 2 coats of PB Wheel Sealant
Glass Polished with Turtle Wax Glass Polish
Trims done with CG New Look Trim Gel
Tyres done with CG New Look Trim Gel also
Exhaust recieved a coat of PB Wheel Sealant aswell to try keep it in good condition
Paint recieved 2 coats of Dodo Juice Purple Haze
This was followed by 2 coats of Z8 :argie:

Engine

Plastics & Hoses were dressed with CG New Look Trim Gel
Metal polished using Megs Metal Polish
Plastic Cover sprayed black an re-fitted

This left the engine looking MUCH better. Still not 100% perfect, but all in a vast improvement.

From this
http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2440.jpg

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff181/branter33/IMG_2594.jpg

And now onto the final pictures. As usual I've went a bit snap-happy. But this time I think its a brilliant transformation and due to us doing it over three days I was actually able to relax and enjoy the detail. I hope your all as impressed as I was. :thumb:

Thanks for all the comments lads :y::y:

Quality job & write up.

You have such a cushty little set up there !!

Cheers man.

I know, it is a good place to have, although it does seem to be colder in there sometimes than it is outside!! Still, beats braving the elements to clean the car!

Very well done mate. I'm impressed.

Thanks :y:

It used to be down on his bumper but kept falling off so it has been up on the visor for a while now. Drove past the police, even close up and they didn't say anything. As far as I'm aware, the front plate only needs to be displayed. Its only the back plate that needs to be lit up.

Don't quote me on that :p

The dents are annoying, considering the likes of the big one at the bottom of the rear quarter panel now that its so clean, just reflects the light wierd and stands out more!

What buckets?? If you've noticed the white 15L tubs with the red lids on them... They're red beaded hand cleaner. (Would make cracking buckets though, never even noticed before!) Although we do sell buckets :y:

I guess that makes sense since the front plate dont need lights.
Wonder how it works with speed cameras?

Anyway nice work done anymore wet sanding since doing your saxo?

I forgot to mention that... The other wheel was getting a tyre fitted onto it. We put the wheel back on before we went up to the cruise :y:

We do accept cheques, but, the buckets we get are more hygiene based. And don't really take too well to being knocked about! lol. We have ran over the buckets numerous times in the vans (not on purpose mind you!) and they aren't the strongest.

Well for normal speed cameras theres no problem because they only take a picture of the back of your car. But I don't know how it would work with the average speed cameras, as they face you (I think)

I've used the wetsanding on a few occasions but I tend to try and polish out all I can and leave wetsanding as a last resort. In saying that, the Audi TT I done a while back required some.. And that paint was HARD.

I'm going to meet a guy on Sunday to give him a bit of tutorial on his newly purchased UDM, so may also give him an introduction to some other techniques such as the 'Slow Cut Method' and wetsanding. :y:

I was using a 35-135mm lens for that. I sometimes use the 50mm but I get a wider angle with the bigger one so it's better for in the warehouse. :y:

:y: Cheers all for the comments :y:

Bit of a delay on replying, Ive been working for STV for the past month so been working silly hours.

But I'm back at my old job for now, so plenty of time to get some details in.

Also big bit of news as I am going into business with a friend of mine. Were starting up our own Detailing business so keep watching this space :p Weve got a unit, rents all sorted. Pricing up an indoor wash bay, etc. And we get the keys on 5th January :y:
So should be able to post up a lot more details, with better cars and better results.:y:

I would do them off my own back just now for about £60 but will be charging proper prices once the company is up and running.
