Been thinking alot lately about what car I am going to move on to after the saxo....Obs choice would be another 182....but after driving and seeing both the ST and VXR..I have had my mind set on one of those...

Until now

Vauxhall Astra Triple 8 ( A DIESEL)

18x8 inch BTCC wheels
Triple 8 four pot callipers, 335mm grooved discs, standard rear discs and callipers.
Triple 8 specially tuned and uprated -30mm springs and shock absorbers
six speed gearbox and clutch
1.9 DOHC 16v common rail fuel injected diesel, turbocharger with variable nozzle turbine. Twin re-map to 160bhp or 200bhp / 330lb ft torque activated via Sport button.

My local butcher had one who upgraded it to a diesel van and now to a ring version of the vxr.

Sensible, looks the dogs and retains about 40mpg

Thoughs please

Doesn't make them good though just because they are limited edition. The astra couple 888 (older one) isn't really holding value.

there was one on pistonheads a little while ago which was about 6.5k or 7k. Somewhere around there. Wasn't much more expensive than the equivalent normal coupe tbh.

Luke
6th November 2008, 16:09
Why does everyone associate diesels like we vans?

Common Rail diesels are relatively quiet tbh.

Danr
6th November 2008, 16:12

I just like the look of these

CampDavid
7th November 2008, 09:04
I'd take the Megane without question.

As a side note I saw a 07 Plate Focus ST3 go through at auction yesterday for 9500quid (1 owner, 20k miles)

How fucking mental is that for a 20k car.

leeroybrown
7th November 2008, 09:07
A diesel Megane?

CampDavid
7th November 2008, 09:14

Yup, the sport one is nice. I'd go for a BMW 120D over all of them though

leeroybrown
7th November 2008, 09:23
Thats because your old... 1 series my god the are horrbile

YOu get all the VXR looks (if not betteer) and performance of a vxr and still retain 40 mpg

alanrichie
7th November 2008, 09:30
my parents just got a 1.9 turbo diesel passat (03)

spins wheels in second its rapid.

i would love one!

CampDavid
7th November 2008, 09:30
The VXR though is extremely ugly, it torque steers and the diesel is a fairly crude bit of technology. The 1 series is a bit of a minger, a 320D coupe may be a better choice (or a 330D)

I'd 26, so not that old you cheeky young scamp!

Why do you need a diesel? They are a load more to buy and no where near as much fun to drive

Tupps
7th November 2008, 09:36
Diesel would only be an option for me if i was doing 30k+ a year

My car's sold for £5350 to a mate

182?

NO idea David, just the 888 has always appealed to me

Althought I am a massive fan of the ST, much prefer that over any crappy focus RS

Winner

Just need my mate to pick mine up

/ Buys 888 Diesel

CampDavid
7th November 2008, 10:08
I'd take tyour 6k to the auctions. Due to the credit crunch stuff just isn''t shifting in the trade, meaning that auctions are short of buyers so bargains can be had. Picked up a 50k mile top spec diesel Laguna with a mate yesterday. 05 plate, £5k on a fourcourt, £2600 to the camp man with the big coat and a mug of ruby. Mint 1 owner V plate VTR, £700. Many deals to be had

Tupps
7th November 2008, 10:09
Hmmm might be worth considering that Campness

CampDavid
7th November 2008, 10:12
Stick to ex lease stuff with full history and one owner, only bid on what you've inspected, budget £500 for a repair just in case and don't get carried away and stick your hand up as an X reg 3.0 S type Jag comes through with 180k on it at £1000. Christ I'm glad I was outbid!

Tupps
7th November 2008, 10:13
Just need to find an auction now

Are they all hpi clear etc? Or is that just a risk you take

CampDavid
7th November 2008, 10:23
Risk you take, hence why I said look for ex lease stuff, all cars that have been out on lease and have come direct from the leasing company. They only lease brand new stuff in general, which is naturally HPI clear.

Most auctions now insist that the selling clarifies if it is HPI clear, been used as a Taxi, police car etc, but if in doubt a quick HPI check could be an idea before you've driven it off site.

http://www.british-car-auctions.co.uk/

is a good place to start. I personally would stick with cars with warrented milage, a full history and from a reliable source. There isn't any point in risking it on buying anything dodgy over a couple of grand at the moment as prices are low anyway. I did see 3 Clio 172/182s in the queue to go through, sadly I wasn't about when they were sold as we were bidding on diesel bus type stuff

Tupps

No probs. Lists are availible online, so if you see something you like PM me and I'll let you know what to expect. I'm not an expert, though bought 4 cars at auction now. If I'm close and availible I may even pop along.

Oh, as a tip, try not to look like a private buyer. The traders have been known to bid up cars that private buyers have been bidding on as they don't like them buying there cars from auctions instead of from dealers (can't think why!)

Mr_X
7th November 2008, 10:34
bmw 120 are quick, well similar to vts.

right time to buy, loads of good deals. my local auction has it written on the car if its hpi checked, and u can return it after 3 hrs of winning it.

Around town my Dad gets 39-42mpg from a 2.0 TDCi Mondeo, so I reckon your estimate will be about right to be honest.

The 6th gear makes a massive difference on long journies however.
