View Full Version : Manager locking car in.

I work a small part time job where the cars are parked out the rear.
Lately my manager (not the store manager) has been asking me to move the car to the front so he can lock the gates early and not be left behind and miss his programs.

I want to know where I stand, as last week I told him that due to having very little petrol and having a small oil leak it would not make sense for me to move the car from the rear of the store to the front.

to which he replied: "Just move it, you won't lose any petrol, you'll lose more petrol driving that extra distance on the journey home"

Which I replied with "actually I will probably lose more petrol starting the engine twice than I will on the entire journey"

"Ok then Sean I will lock your car in"

"You're really need to think..." and I moved the car.

Tonight I'm refusing to move it as I'm not paid very well and can't afford to keep moving the car every night I go to work etc. I would park round the front to begin with and take the car park dings from customers *shudders* but even though I've worked there 2 years and 3 months they haven't supplied a pass.

Tbh the manager mentioned here has always been against me due to me siding with another colleage who wanted the management position when they were both applying for it.:n:

Is it even worth arguing about mate. If he wants to lock the car park then he is more than within his rights to do so. I doubt you have anything in your contract entitiling you to a carparking space.

If that's the case, then surely you could swing two of the useless appendages below your waist?

Agree with Danr in a non arsey way.

I wouldn't even bother arguing with him.

I wouldn't usually but as stated it's just the fact that this time last week I asked politely to begin with but he just threw it back in my face. My store manager (who respects me and views all opinions in an equal sense) leaves our cars out the rear and locks the gates when the store closes.

Why should a part time manager do things differently when the store management and every other senior member does things the old/correct way.
It's just a tad annoying really.

Just say if it causes problesm in the rear give me a pass to the fron

It is annoying buddy but at the end of the day he is your superior and can do what he wants. If it's really bothering you and there is someone higher up than him then you could always have a friendly word of the record and see if it could be changed. May not be worth the agro though as you don't know the relationship between the two guys.

You don't sound like an arse at all dan, just worth hearing the majority's views. I'd love to actually view my contract but as it has changed so many times over the last year there's no point in having a copy at home.

I suppose the fact that I go to Uni get back in time for work, then working in the warehouse lifting heavy goods and generally sorting the place out in the cold, to then work customer services whilst other staff on the same pay are still hanging around in the same place chatting. I'm the highest trained member of staff (bar management) and on the same rate :n:

I'm planning on asking for a pass just to sort this out with my store manager and to stop getting unneccesarily stressed at work.:A:

It sounds like you should be more worried about your pay. Have you ever asked about a pay increase?

I had planned on asking for a pay rise for all those in cash office and those who work on customer services back when I got home from my holiday in september, but it went up a small amount due to inflation anyway.

I suppose I haven't asked as I don't want to seem rude asking and risk losing the job when I may find it hard to get more work due to the state of the country's economy.

They are very good with sorting hours for me as I am respected in that sense and what I have done for the company (fixing servers, delivery, fixing the compactors and rubbish extractors) is also respected (but not paid for but neither am I actually thanked to my face).

I'm homewares trained (an external store) cash office trained (the stores accounts) warehouse and yard trained, customer service trained, and cashier trained.
I did ask about a rise when I got my first "promotion" but they stated it was just something for the CV ;)...... :n:

Must be annoying but I would drag 'moving my car' for at least 20 minutes. Which Im sure he wouldnt mind.

They can't sack you for asking for a payrise. I was paid a pony amount but grew some balls and approached the director. Sat him down and had a good chat with him about it. It helped i was being approached by another company but if you give them 3 reasons and just ask them to have a think then you may get something. If they say no then fair enough but it's worth a shot :)

agrees, the guy thats giving you some grief about this could make it worse if the higher manager has a word, so i would park it round the front and take 2 spaces tbh!!!!

"Sorry I broke down around the corner and the rac took 20 minutes to get here"

He has to cover me... which usually means he stands where I was when I left the building trying to grab a member of staff to cover him who is supposedly coverring me. :zainy:

Cheers dan I'll have a word with my store manager as soon as he returns. I've always been puzzled why everyone is on equal pay.
I doubt anything will come of it and it may break the relationship with my store manager and tbh I was planning on leaving before I started uni if the hours weren't good but sadly they fit nicely.
I feel I'm going to struggle to persuade them but I've sat the store manager down before and stated that:

"I'll be needing these hours to fit in and around my new uni year, I'm sorry that they have changed but I can't actually do anything about it as my education does come first. I have given you the list of hours I'm free for work so you can decide, however if you can't change my hours I'm afraid I'm going to have to leave the company."

to which he replied "The last thing I want is for you to leave Sean you're a very committed member of staff and I will do my best so suit your hours" :A:

It's just the lack of respect the other manager has that winds me up. :n:

He sounds alright tbh mate. I'd speak to him about it.
When i first started working (many moons ago) at sainsbury's i started on a shiiiite wage. A load of new people started a few months later and were on more than me. I went fooking loopy lol!

And? lol. 5 minutes to go to your locker for your keys, 5 minutes to go back, 5-10 minutes in car, 5 minutes walking back to locker, 5 minutes back to shop floor.

Is no one else pissed off they have to do this?

There is only one other part timer who has another car believe it or not another saxo (needless to say it is chavved out) and the bloke who drives it revs the b*llocks out of it everywhere so I don't think he really cares.

Plus he gets on with the manager mentioned and they both found it appropriate to moan about a member of staff who was taken to hospital after having a serious stomach issue on the floor, complaining she should do more work and stop flunking... they discoverred she was pregnant... (not really selling my work place really.)

just park around the front but to stop customers banging into your car and hitting your doors with there doors etc just do what i do, park your car ontop of one of the lines for a parking space so you take up to parking spaces ( if you dont understand just ask me) and then no customers can get near your car ;)

why would it, i do it and get no complaints. well actually about 8 of my work mates do it which is quite funny seeing 8 cars in a row taking up 2 parking spaces each. if he parks somewhere out of site and then take up 2 spaces he should be fine. but i say just try it, you got nothing else to lose

if he works in retail such as Asda, tesco's etc, he will get into trouble for it.
Propper pisses me off when you see people taking up two spaces.

especially in a saxo.

Only time i've seen it warranted is when they are tight spaces and the car is something special. When i went out in the evo we parked it right in the corner of the car park on it's own in 2 spaces. Didn't think that was to bad. If it was a 1.1 saxo though i wouldn't give a shit. I don't do it in my car.

I used to have to move my car in one my old jobs or else we all got locked in. Everyone used to hate moving thier cars so I used to move 'em. Got me out the office for a bit and got to drive and 'review' different cars.

im with plum on this.

i can tell you why you get paid the same as everyone else, even though you can work in many areas, you work in a supermarket, they dont pay people on individual merit, if you are one grade you get one amount, you progress up to another grade and you will get more.

Not really bud no I have plenty of which to worry about, the manager in question just generally doesn't care about the staff, and in a way I wanted to prove a point to him that he needs to have some consideration and view other staffs views appropriately. I had a word with him today and he was much more considerate and has clearly got over the colleage rivalry within the store. We even managed to have a laugh about it... he stated he was just having a bad day and had noticed the leak coming from my car and even apologised.

We had began to get on recently but the moving the car instance brought back moments and the tension we once had between staff.

Please don't jump on the gun when you don't know the full truth :y:

as stated I wanted to know what would happen if the car was locked in, I made the thread to try to get the bored helpless members stuck at work something to discuss and I believe I've accomplished that (they got to take time out of their day for), it didn't serve any real purpose in the end.

And yes I am tight thankyou for pointing that out to me, and matty-retail.

Not this time of year as it's around 4 miles (not far I know) I don't like unneccesary expenditure, say buying chocolate only to throw it away, or driving to the shops when the bike is sufficient enough. Driving my car to work is more of a pleasure than a pain-and the oil leak is being sorted next week. Its no big deal on that front.

My hours have been cut too so I'm only at work twice a week and at Uni four times a week. Leaving saturday free. I'm not actually bothered about the petrol (and in all honesty I do move my car for the more considerate managers-those who I have not had bad runnings with in the past and who generally respect me and my peers.)

Last week when I stood up against said manager it was purely to tell him I was annoyed at him, and this came through today when I spoke to him :A:

Cant believe i just read all that:wacko:

As said mate your just going to have to put up nout you can really say to superiors, asking you to move your car so carpark can be locked doesnt sound unreasonable, tbh i reckon if you spoke to the big man you wouldnt be taken seriously.

I would however if i was you ask for a payrise :y:

Can't believe what it started tbh.
I know and it's not unreasonable in too much of a sense but the pair of us had a bad day and clashed, but we've spoke about it now. The head manager hasn't been informed about it as such and he's a chatty guy and gets on with me and knows my family, I'm closest to the head then anyone else really and he has not been informed that we move the cars round front as the lower staff do not do it when he is around...

I will be considerring a payrise just dependent on whether a new job is on the cards first :y:
