i no a few doorman, they all are trained fighters. they do martial arts and other forms of self defence. so i think employers would like to see you have experience in self defence
i say self defence but most of them just want to aggravate you and find something to start a fight with you and kick you out grrrr! But not all of them tho

You will normally get trained to a certain degree in self defence, as a mate of mine has just finished doing his door license and he was trained on certain things like how to take someone down and how to take weapons off people etc

to be a doorman at pubs and clubs, you need to go through a training provider to gain the Door Supervision Licence. It's taking the SIA 6weeks to get all the relevant checks etc done (CRB and so on), and you cannot work until your licence is 'in process' on the SIA website, you can check on the website with your 'Unique Reference Number'. I know this because i work for a Security Company as a Recruitment Officer, and i have also had experience in the screening and vettting side of things, so know more than i probably should about the SIA.
There are ups and downs to being specifically a doorman for a pub/club...ups are the rate of pay from what i can think of. The downs are hours are all over the shop, un sociable hours as you will be working when your mates are out etc.
my 2p anyway :)

i have trained with a lot of doormen
and most of them cant fight for toffee, it is about the ability to deal with people and be a people person
nearly all fights can be avoided,
but if it comes down to it, you must be rpepared to get into a fight and not back down

My dad used to do a few door jobs when i was little, he has trained for years as a powerlifter and he definatly can have a row and look "ard", as it were. Ive seen alot of his mates who do it and no, you dont have to be big and bulky to do it, but it bloody helps!
You have to think if your gona do this, its not the same as it was a good few years ago, with the different array of weapons available to any avergae joe, it only takes one c**t with a blade and one lucky shot and you could easily end up in hospital or worse. When doing that sort of job you got to learn about getting jumped adn learn how to take a hit if someone throws one. For example a few months back there was a boxer getting thrown out of a club by a doorman 3 times his size, even though he had had a few to drink he landed this doorman on his arse and put him in hospital.
Another example would be, you've been on the door all night with your other doorman. You've been nice to everyone and if you say they cant come in your nice about it and all that. What if you've had a bad punter one night that puts you in a bad mood, you could easily turn round to one guy who's done not much wrong, just been a little rowdy and said "fuck off outa this place before i break ya neck" or words to that effect. Now he could get the hump with you, what if he gets 10 of his mates and waits for you that night, what happens when you walk to your car after a long shift in the early hours of the morning and he's there with 10 other guys? You could be in some real shite.
The law has changed also, once apon a time if you couldn't handle yourself on the door and a punter makes a right mug of you, you would get sacked and they would employ a better bloke. However now, if you are to be seen giving a good kicking to a c**t outside the club, you coudl be hauled down the police station by your boss and your liscence can be taken away and there goes your job.
Im not saying to not do it, but just take into account all these things. Yes i would and may do it in the future, and good luck to you mate if you do do it. Moneys worth it if you can adjust to the hours :)
And remember its true that most fight can be avoided, but whats ive said is what could and may well happen when you dont want it to
Thats my quick responce lol. Hope ive helped a bit, if i havent then ignore me xx

I'm a doorman, have been for years first started before all the SIA was about and then when they came in force had to get my badge. I had to have a qualification on conflict managment and door supervison or something cant rememeber as did the course years ago, one thing i do rememebr about the course it that its all about the different law acts and nothing to do with hands on throwing people out. Genrally as a doorman just treat people how u like to be treated yourself, if someone is fucking about i give them a warning or if i want someone to leave i tell them there leaving and give them two options either 1) you have 2mins to finish ur drink and leave by yourself or 2) i will drag you out. 9 times out of 10 they will just take themselfs out as they dont want to look like a cunt being dragged out in front of there mates but then u allwasy got to be ready for a big kickoff and obviously there are alot of times where u dont have the option to speak to someone as the shits allready hit the fan so ur hands on stright away. Just make sure its the right line of work for you as you can never loose your bottle or its game over you will loose the respect aswell. Being a doorman is not as easy as you would think, emagine being on your own with 4 big rugby blokes kicking it off at you and one with a broken bottle in his hand, i've been in situations like that many a time, knives pulled out on us, out numbered, bottles launched, glass etc.... you need to be on the ball 100% of the time and definatly need to be able to handle yourself big time, all that aside i have had some quality fights and been outnumbered and stll come out the other side without going down, think i have posted some of the situations on here cant remember
