I was wandering what you guys thought about the 206 Gti as my saxo is now worse for wear and i want somthing bigger. i.e. engine and car. There insurance group 14 which isnt that bad but i wouldnt mind walking to work for a few months so i can save some money up to pay it.

So comments and opinions please.....

I like them, my mom has one.

They are a good upgrade from a saxo. I've enjoyed mine so far although small annoying things have gone wrong which aren't cheap to fix. £155 for a new seatbelt anyone?

They do good mpg and are very comfortable. I find it a hoot to drive, no real difference to a saxo imo. Ok it's a bigger car but grips very well and has quite a good amount of power.

You aren't a target for constant races which is pretty nice and older people consider it a nice car which is never a bad thing. For me it's brilliant.

Also, prices have dropped alot recently so there are some real bargains out there. If you can get one with the full SP kit. Arches etc. I will be loading mine up with the SP kit in the new year. Looks alot better imo.

306 GTI is also group 14 and a fair bit swifter. Rated a load better too and cheap as chips to buy

Danr

Only thing the 206 has over the 306 imo is they age. 306 is quite dated now and looks it. 206 less so...

i do like the 180 gti's. my mate has a silver one and he loves it.

180's are cool imo. Plummeting in price. Insurance is a bastard though compared to other cars in the same class.

what bhp are the non 180's ?

I agree, though I think the 306 is a nicer resolved shape. Remember, Peugeot did the 206 in house, Pininferina did the 306. Pinin are pretty good at designing nice cars I've been told ;) (they also did the 106)

138 bhp. Don't feel that rapid but are quite comfortable.

Pininferina do know how to design cars, problem is they designed it back in the 90's. This was also in the 90....

They do kick the shit out of the golf gti though. 138bhp isn't that bad really considering they have the hotter 180. It's like the vtr compared to the vts.

Hahaha

Take that are really early 90s. The 306 was restyled in 1997, the 206 came out in 1998 IIRC.

Don't mind 90s stuff. Better than a lot of the shit going round today [/oldmangrumblemode]

I have owned a 206 I was a fan, it was the HDI model

Although I am yet to go in a 180 so I may change my mind

Danr
17th November 2008, 10:51
I might get a 180 next year Mr Brown. It's on the shortlist. If i do you can have a go at FCS or something.

leeroybrown
17th November 2008, 10:53
Ohh nice one

If I decided to take voluntary redundancy you wont be the only one with a new car a FCS :}

They are 138bhp.

They look fine and drive very well but like said abit under powered for a GTi model, I would consider one if the right one popped up.

GTi-6 is group 15 imo too.

Group 15 in your opinion?

Good job it was actually downgraded a few years back to 14. IMO

Danr

I didn't know the 306 was 14. That's quite interesting. Drink petrol do they not David?

when I insured mine last year I was told it was group 15 and the rallye was 16.

Says insurance group 15 on parkers. Although David does own one.... Who knows.

CampDavid
17th November 2008, 12:25
Comes back as a group 14 car when I've insured it, price is the same as a standard VTS. Rallye is a bit higher. Oddly the Xsara VTS is stil up at 16, so costs more than both, despite being slower and less prone to oversteer

Petrol is a poor point. 30mpg is what you'll get driving sensibley. Do short journey, thrash it unmercifuily from cold and it gets down to 16mpg. Which is wank, but then you shouldn't nail it from cold!

Other costs are similar to the Saxo, though th cambelt needs doing every 40k and they are a bit tougher to work on.

Just sold my second one. Will have another in the future, just a bit too heavy for Helen to park so it had to go

Ive been umming and arring for months on what to get next and i think 'car for the money' its going to be one of these. I saw a nice 02 50k mile one for £2995 last week.

I've driven a gti 180, I expected more, I'm not sure if I've ever been so underwhelmed by a car.

Seats are nice though.

Ha I used to own a xsara vts, was defo less prone to oversteer but was no slower then a gti-6 I can vouch for that

Main selling point was the rapid amount of fuel it drank in a short period of time....More then my 280 bhp Scooby

GTi-6 Rocks,
would definitely have one / Rallye.

as for a 206 GTi,
practical car with enough oomph.

Pretty poor power output from a 2.0 16v though unfortunately.
Still a nice comfy motor.

compared to some. The mpg you just mentioned on the 6 is poor compared. As is the same on a 2.0 147 alfa iirc.

I get better than a vts as well.

Awesome

Danr

Really enjoyed driving it, comfy, very nippy, nice inside....plus back ofthe car is comfy... its got space, lol
id buy his off him, but hes had it sprayed orange, n its a really pap job, spoilt it!

My GF has a 206. 1.6 and its horrible to drive! Really bad driving position, Just terrible!

Saxo is so much nicer in my opinion!

Karl

I'd like to say,
a Clio sports driving position isnt really that nice. does any of the other millions of Clio owners on this site agree or?

I don't find the 206 driving position bad at all.

How tall are you?

I personally think you'd be mad top buy one over a Clio, but that's just me.

I've been musing over whether to go balls out with the saxo or get a ph1 172 and start with the power figure I'd want for the saxo. Taking into account the cost of converting to 16v and tweaking to 160+ bhp I could buy a 172 for that money. It's a doozy of a pickle.

Not for one second have I considered a 206 as I find them very dull to drive and not exactly confidence inspiring in the handling department.

Danr
17th November 2008, 14:10
hmmm, different horses for different courses really.

I wouldn't have a 172/182 due to the size of them. It's just not practical for me to own such a small car anymore. The 206 isn't as good as the clio sport. It's well documented but with their current prices they are a decent alternative to alot of boring cars on the market.

Matt
17th November 2008, 14:42
Well im 6"6. And i wanted to keep the car for a while so want somthing quick but spacey and i cand affors a RS4 so i think to 206 would be ideal.
Because im goint to keep the car for a few years i dont want the 306 gti-6 as its an old car. A mad car but an old 1....

Does the gti come in 2 specs?
..Gti and
..Gti 180
Or is it just 180:wacko:

TDID
17th November 2008, 14:45
GTI 138bhp and GTI 180.

Get some test drives and make your mind up, I don't like them personally but you may have a different opinion that suits what you want the car to do.

Danr
17th November 2008, 14:46
Gti is 138 bhp, pretty much the same spec as in gadgets etc.
The 180 gti is obviously quicker and has a more sporty interior.
