I'm looking at new sat navs.

My old one is about four years old and half the roads either don't exist or have been altered.

its an old sat nav so i want a new one and i'm not bothered about updating it.

but, when i get my new one, i would like to update it every so often.

I know theres a cost involved, but how much is it?

its a Garmin i'm looking at.

Thanks in advance

Software updates are free ... Map updates aren't. Can range from £30-£50 depending on make and model.

im sure ive read article which imply "acquiring" map updates for free is easy too :P

"Anyone with a TomTom device can take advantage of our smart TomTom Map Update Service. This service gives you every single release of your map over a 12-month period, from the equivalent of just £7.95 per quarter. That’s four new maps a year"

hmmm maybe tomtom isnt so good for sat naving bar ease of use... unless they new maps are "acquirable" :D
