Any good at Maths and problem solving ?

Basically we are having a Christmas quiz in work, and our team is stuck
on this question.

Can anybody help ?

Three football teams played each other once in a tournament.

Athletic beat City, City beat Borough and Borough beat Athletic.

They could not decide which team should receive the trophy because:

Athletic had scored the most goals
Borough had the best goal average (goals for divided by goals against)
City had the best goal difference (goals for minus goals against)

Fewer than 40 goals were scored in the tournament.

What were the scores for the teams in each of the three games?

A= 5+2 = 7 A have most goals
B= 3+0 = 3
C= 6+0 = 6

Best Goal Average
A= 5/0 = dividing error so 0
B= 3/2 = 1.5 B have best goal average
C =6/0 = dividing error so 0

Best Goal Difference
A= 5-0 = 5
B= 3-2 = 1
C= 6-0 = 6 C have best Goal difference

Total goals scored = 16

I expect people to say it's wrong because of the goal average error but mathematically it's right :P

I'll work out the actual answer later without errors lol

Im not sure about your averages, the question says to work out you need to
divide the total goals for with the total goals against.
So for Athletic it would be 7 / 5 = 1.4 giving them the best average.

B 8
C 10

Best Goal Average
A 1.333333333
B 0.666666667
C 1.111111111

Best Goal Difference
A 3
B -4
C 1

so i think it's wrong just like mine was :(

7/5 means 7 divided by 5. This is because Athletic scored 7 and conceded 5.
This is then divided to give the so called average.

but how have they conceded 5 it only adds up to 3 :s

I used to teach gcse maths lol and did a level maths myself but even that didn't help
