this is a thread for people who are in the trade really, do you think snap on tools are worth the money or are we just paying for the name now? is the quality much better than other makes?

My mate who works at VW has pretty much every snap-on tool there is, and tbf i used a few and i think you pay for quality more than the brand, i think they are worth the money.

Nice though they are, they are way over priced.

way 2 overpriced, after all you can buy a full range of tools out of halfords and have a lifetime guarentee on them for the price of a top half toolchest

To be honest, for stuff like spanners etc Halfords pro are fine. I know mechanics that really rate them.

Snap on maybe for small bits that get loads of abuse

The way i look at it is............you buy a halfords professional set.........if you break any of the tools replace them with snap on. As there are quite a few sockets i don't use. So only the select few are constantly abused.

im with dave. The halfords professional range is great, if anything breaks its replaced there and then except the ratchet mech.

Also some decent deals on the halfords pro stuff at this time of year.

snap on are fantastic but they are bloody expensive.

Halford pro or the new advanced stuff is 90% as good and you get a life time warrenty on it all. There so much better priced aswell.

I used Signet to be honest and didn't find much difference between them and the Snap On stuff. They are cheaper than Snap On and have the same lifetime guarantee, ie if it breaks they replace it. Infact the lads i worked with had used Snap On exclusively throughout their time as mechanics and they noticed the quality go down over the years :n:. Infact we had quite a few of the new Snap On tools break. I am not saying Snap On is crap, my mates old Snap On tool's were bomb proof. Its just that the metal in the new stuff doesn't seem to be as good quality as the old.

Snap On tools are OK but if you want quality and strength I'd pay a bit more and buy Teng Tools, and at all costs AVOID SEALEY TOOLS because Sealey Tools break very easily and are NOT good quality.

im thinking im just going to go snap on, lifetime guarntee, nothing else can compete on quality levels and there is always a chance of a deal with the snap on man.

They're pricey but worth every penny imo, my snap-on collection is slowly growing as and when I can afford it!

i've always been quite happy using halfords pro. When i worked at halfords for a couple of years, the area manager always told me they were made in the same factory as snap on. Don't know the truth in that but several of the store managers seem to beleive that too.
halfords pro tools, you don't need a receipt either. Just take the broken tool in and they'll replace it, no questions asked.

Dont be loyal to one tool brand, they all have lifetime warrenties from the likes of snap on, blue point, sealey, facom, sykes pickavant, laser, halfords professional, signet are all good tools, its how you use them. Using chrome vandium sockets on air guns if obviously going to weaken them an then they break, i got endless tool makes lol, if i see it and i need it i buy it regardless of brand and ive got a full tool box and havent had to replace anything yet this year. Ive seen mechanics throw tools arround and are allways replacing them, look after your tools! I got a 2 quid hammer off the market and its excelent, fiberglass shaft and its still going 2 years on after alot of abuse. And my draper air gun is still going, cost 100 quid and was well worth it, also got a chicago prenumatic which is another good one. Theres ingersoll rand, endless list lol

I couldn't have said it better myself. I think people don't realise that most tool's come with lifetime warranties and guarantees like SnapOn and are made to similar standards. The difference with some of the other tool dealers is that SnapOn dealers talk the talk, just like used car salesmen :D. The drawers on my SnapOn tool box slide in and out with the same feel as my old Halfrauds cheapy and it scratches just as easily. The only difference is it hurts more when my SnapOn box gets scratched :wall:.

All in all I think the best philosophy with tools is to mix and match...

Dad's got a few snap on tools and to be fair he's had them years and they still look fine (ie points inside the sockets not worn etc)

Ive had Halfords Pro ones for ages now and spanner/socket wise they cant be faulted IMO plus with the lifetime guarantee im more than happy with that- they get quite a bit of abuse too with me always working on the car

The only bits which ive had a problem with are the Torx bits in particular T20/30/40 which were replaced without question. As there are a few bits suspension wise that cause an issue with these bits ive bought each of these as impact bits too :)

i think snap-on are overpriced for what they are but are unbeliveably good quality! if you are a mechanic and going to be using tools on a day to day basis id definitly go for one of the better makes, although the halfords ''professional'' range come with a lifetime guarantee, there is nothing more annoying then in the middle of a job a tool breaks on you! and you have to tell the cutomer, im just off to halfords to swap my tool, professional? i think not. i dont think the customer would be to impressed.

Only thing about halfords the ratchet mech isnt gaurenteed wich is pointless, but there spanners are ok.

Tools realy depends on how u treat them and how often u use them, i'm a mechanic so most of my tools are snap on the reason for this is because i use my tools every day, the build quality is amazing, hardly ever have any snap on tools break but if they do under the lifetime warranty they replace any broken tools stright away so i find paying a bit more for snap on now pays in the long run being a mechanic. If i was just a hobby car enthusiast or general diy'er then i would just buy halfords pro and then replace any bits that break with snap on bits, its only certain tools that get abused on a daily basis that break e.g 10mm is a very common size on anything so any 10mm tools gets most wear. As for the tool box itself i have around £6k worth of tools which is quite an investment so i wanted to store them in something decent i did look into snap on but the tool box i wanted was £3000 just for an empty box that doesnt do anything but hold the tool so i got a mac tool box instead for £1800, again mac tools are just like snap on same sort of build quality and lifetime guarentee and i highly recommend these to

here is a pic of my box:
