View Full Version : Dead XR2i?

Ive been running around in the Saxo and the Golf cab for the last few months, as the XR2i failed its MOT (in March).

Last week, the golf was taken off the road to mothball it for winter, so out came the trusty XR2i, for winter use.

I insured the bugger, then dropped it off at the garage for repair/MOT whilst I was in Scotland.

Had a few calls from the garage whilst I was away... they couldn't get it started.

Upon my return it took me about 5 seconds to point out he had left the fuel pump earth lead off the battery after he'd fitted a new battery.

Anyway... long story short. The garage now tells me the small welding job on the sill is now a huge job and is not repairable??? smileys/fcuk.gif

Surely not?? He reckons there is no decent metal left to weld a new sill to?

Anyway, if this is the case, what should I do?

I want a runabout for the winter, so the Saxo doesnt get covered in crap everyday (very dusty where I work too - chemical plant)

Do I spend a load of dollar on the XR2i?

Or do I buy a shed? (not like the Onion smileys/smiley5.gif )

Or do I buy something old skool, which is cool!

Or do I get something fairly decent but not too expensive? 106GTi smileys/smiley17.gif

Not really wanting to spend a lot of cash though... and Ive just paid the XR2i insurance for 12 months! D'oh!!

Depends how much you wanna spend?

Loadsa cheap cars about as the second hand market is extremely slow.

You could get something really nice for about a grand.

Why not buy another saxo? cheap VTR??? At least you know where you stand with them.

I've been to see the garage... Its going to cost me £80 for the parts he's already put on the car, but hes not charging me labour. (whoopy doo!)

He says 2 welders have looked at it and it would cost £300-£400 for them to fix.

I know I could fix it much cheaper if I did it or got one of the lads from weork to weld it... what a pain in the arse!

Not looking good for the little red 2i!! smileys/smiley19.gif

Just brought the car home.

Not looked under it yet. smileys/smiley5.gif

You can buy replacement sills cheaply, but he reckons the sill area and floor is rotten, meaning that in order to weld on new sills, Id have to weld parts of the floor to be strong enough, etc... which is carpet/seats out job.

Also, the petrol spout has broken away from the bodywork. (the worst thing all these fiestas fail from eventually)

It's Suie's old car though... be a shame to see it scrapped!

Will ask around... A few people still owe me favours smileys/smiley2.gif

Your mate was supposed to fix it about 6 months ago! smileys/smiley2.gif

Come have a look at it one time fella, but I want to sort something fairly quickly.

I still have Asho's welder... and it will most likely need a sill on each side.

But after we pulled the side skirt out of the way to expose the sill area properly... it was pretty dead!! smileys/fcuk.gif
