i posted a thread at the beginnong of december about losing my wallet on a night out...

my sister phoned today saying i had mail from vodafone about taking out a plan with them, taken out two days after i lost my wallet!!!! some bastards set up a mobile phone contract, sky tv contract and insurance under my name with my bank details!!!

what can i do and who do i go to?? the banks cancelled the direct debits and the police say they cant do anything because i lost it in glasgow, so i would need to take it up with the glasgow police but i wont be through there till new year

yeah, cancelled the cards straight away but they were still able to set up direct debits because the sort code and account number dont change when u cancel a card

If theyve set up a sky tv contract I would ring sky and find out where its for, after all it must be in your name if its from your bank account! Once you have the address its up to you...........

How would one become aware of loan applications in their name? Does this stuff normally come through the post? If not you may not realise until its too late?

I've always been worried about this kind of thing

easy way to stop dd's being setup is to open a new account and close your existing one. that way the details are all then null and void.

i can with one account but my student account has got a whopper of an overdraft on it, would they let me transfer that or would i have to pay that off before opening a new one?

To get instant help, if you think you've fallen victim, Experian’s CreditExpert monitoring includes access to an ID fraud protection helpline; while this costs £80 a year, it offers a free 30 day trial to this service. So if you need it, simply sign up to the service, use the ID fraud helpline and then cancel the service before the 30 days is up. See the free credit ratings article for more info.

If you've noticed unusual account activity and genuinely suspect someone is using your identity to apply for new products, then contact Fraud Prevention Service CIFAS, and ask them to put a 'Protective Registration' on your credit reference file. This costs £11.75 and will alert all lenders who see it to carry out further checks before approving credit applications.

However, don't use this lightly. Getting Protective Registration on your files will slow up any credit searches, and possibly mean you don't get approved for things you need, from credit cards to mobile phone contracts.

Taken from Money Saving Expert, hope this helps.

Phone the bank, they should sort it all.
I had the same thing happen to me 2 weeks ago now, Tried to use my account for over £1500, buying everything from jackets, to £200 of potato growing equipment (LOL!).
Phoned up the bank, answered a few questions,
You have to give them details of what is fraudulent, and what is yours, and in my case, reported it on the tuesday, and all the money was back in on the friday.
I would advise getting them to change the account number though, as in my case, they have tried to use my details once again.
Hope that helps mate.

The DD guarantee covers you in cases like this. The bank must refund you the money which they will likely charge back to the companies who have been fraudelently paid. Whether the bank actually gets the money back is not your concern.

http://www.bacs.co.uk/BACS/Consumers/Direct+Debit/Your+rights/

It is deffo not your job to chase this up with the police or the companies.

Even if the DD guarantee does not apply(which is possible) you are due a refund as the bank have allowed these dd's to be set up fraudelently. This is covered by the basic banking code

http://www.bankingcode.org.uk/pdfdocs/PERSONAL_CODE_2008.PDF - see section 12

If you still get no where just say you wish to escalate this to a formal complaint. Dont accept that you must put your complaint in writing as most will take a complaint over the phone.

At this stage they will either sort out a refund straight away or let it go through their complaints procedure. If its the latter you will still get a refund but you should ask for additional compo for the stress, inconvenience etc etc

i get scared of shit like this.
although my bank are quite good and have been on the ball and stopped things from being paid, they have been in touch when i have been using my card and globe trotting with work. it normally involves a phone call and a 'is that you trying to use your card in the uk, portugal and angola today?? lol
i have told them to call me and verify anything over £500 on my current account. i dont want any pikey bastard trying to rob me of my hard earned cash.
i get scared doing internet banking in case someone gets all my details, every week i check my direct debits etc on line and make sure there are no new ones or payments that i have never made.

my cuz had his card cloned in turkey and they bourght a shit load of stuff! took him a while to get it sorted, they got computers a holiday, flights etc and cash!! sly twats
