Hi all, i have had an engine conversion to a vts form a vtr, and i have read many peoples thread saying that there car has worked fine with the vtr radiator, but last night i went out, drove about 4 miles and the temp gauge was in the red, un-done the radiator cap and it was bubbling and hissing.
I had the head gasket done a few weeks ago, and it is full of oil, could this be the thermostat ???

help greatly apreciated

if its full of oil again its the head gasket without a doubt!! if its clear tho it could be thermostat just take it out and see if it still does it but again if your water has boiled the chances are damage is already done, did they pressure check and skim the head while it was off,

Its still Full of top line of oil, the head has been skimmed, and the water is just above minimum level, its abit of a craemy colour.

flushed the whole system?

Could be the water pump, pal of mine had a similar prob and his water pump was shot. He'd drive for 10 mins and the car would overheat, but from the oil I does sound like the head gasket.
Would be worth while flushing the system tho, fingers crossed it could just be an air lock

Check the water hoses, i had a rover coupe turbo and the return pipe to the water tank was blocked causing it to over heat and need a new hg

Scott-jarvis

ill check the water hoses, but the water is going through cause its boiling itself

Have you opened the tank when its hot?, usually water would come gushing out if theres a lot of pressure

i had a blocked pipe in my metro (K-series) from a hgf and when it was running again i managed to remove the blockage by squeezing the water pipes (for me it was the heater-engine) then i flushed the system, and with hgf you need to skim and flush about 5 - 10 times to get it clean again.

1.The Head was skimmed, and it was absolutly fine after.
2.When i take the cap of its bubbles and slowly dribbles out
3.it was flushed through
4.I have bled the system
5.Engine is full of oil, and radiator level good

creamy colour suggests head gasket

check the oil cap for mayo

just having it rebuilt means nothing ive seen a headgaset last 3 miles
there one of those parts that either lasts forever or just fails for no reason

Ok,

First of all get the engine running and feel all the water pipes you should find one or two are cold and when the engine warms up it releases this back into the rad, if those pipe(s) don't get hot even when the fan kicks in then it is thermostat failure.

I concur Alex, BUT it could just be because it hasn't been flushed enough.

is the radiator getting hot?

If cold the thermostate is faulty and not letting water into the rad

if unevenly hot with cold or cooler spots then would indicate that there is a blockage

My radiator Gets slightly warm, but no-were near Hot
I FORGOT TO SAY MY FAN DOESNT CUT IN, guessing that be thermostat

yes, stat sounds like its gne, all you have to do is feel the top hose, if its hot then the thermostat is opening, if its warm or cold the stat is cold. Dont assume the HG has gone again, it could be a case where it hasnt been flushed properly and the oil and water mixture is back in the cooilng system, take the thermostat out and test it, and also get the cooling system pressure tested to see if the HG has gone again, check the dipstick & oil cap to see if any water has deposited into the oil.

i had the same problems with the vtr cooling system too, and it was the stat at fault aswell buddy, new one cost a fiver from minofern, job done, ive heard the vts engine with the vtr cooling system runs hot anyway, it will sit at 3 quaters on the temp gauge where the vtr engine would sit at halfway then fan would kick in, i would swap to the vts set up myself though mate.:y:

in my vtr it would sit at the bottom of the gauge, then half would be fan
but on it now sits at just above half, and fan kicks in if th gauge moves about 3 mm up
my stat was £8.22, lol, just glad they had one in stock
