as title.

i know its not a saxo but i know there's quite a few people on here that know their shit.

it seems to be coming from the cam belt/ alternator area

one garage said they thought it might be one of the pulleys?

when the engine is started from cold, the noise is loudest. its like a high pitched screech type noise but it only lasts a second or so. it can be heard right at the start of the video. you may have to listen a few times to hear it. then the engine just seems to genrally sound rough until its warmed up a bit then it runs perfectly.

any ideas?

i will ask on a vw forum also but they're genrally not as helpful as sax-p.

sounds like a covers loose and the vibration of the engine is making it rattle :n:

if its a turbo i would say that a bost pipes blow off or split or somthing, if not somthing like a pully tensioner bearing or even water pump

1.8 n/a

covers arent loose

it just sounds rough until it warms up.

i'm thinking its something to do with the cam belt and i dont want that to go as i cant afford a new engine.

could be the alternator belt tensioner pulley bearing has collapsed

could be the alternator belt tensioner pulley bearing has collapsed

i'm thinking its something like that.

how will i be able to tell once i have taken the belt off? as i wont be able to start it up anymore to see where the noise is coming from.

there will be play in the pulley (give it a wiggle)
should have minimal or no play

it sounds like its clunking round
and the squeal will be as itll sag on the bearing so the belt will be loose

that makes sense.

if i take the belt off, i could just give everything a wiggle to see if there's any excessive play.

actually, could i do that without taking the belt off?

i dont think there's much point doing it until after christmas now as i wont be able to get parts.

im saying its the alternator pulley. there was a golf that came into my work one time and the pulley had pretty much jst collapsed inside and had slid off the shaft on the alternator. i'd defo have a look at the alternator pulley.

:fcuk:

ok, i've got the belt off now.

the alternator pulley, power steering pulley and camshaft pulley all seem fine.

i think the problem is with the tensioner. there's very little play in it but the bearing is making some noise when turning. its not loud at all but i'm guessing the noise will be amplified when its under pressure?

i'm going to go down to VW tomorrow to try and ask one of their mechanics to see if they think it needs replacing and order the parts.

if this isnt the problem. is there anything else that it could be?

i would asume it was the bearings then lol hmm doesnt sound like it but could the startor motor be stayin on a lil longer than it should eg sticking ?

sounds like the bottom pulley i was gonna say...same as what my saxo sounds like and mines loose as fack...how long you had the car? its not something warming up is it? that sounds stupid lol

i've had the car a year and the noise has come and gone. it didnt make the noise in the summer months but most the year when it's colder it does.

it does sound like the starter motor over running but thats on the other side of the engine to where the noise is coming from i think. unless it just sounds like that way.

is it safe to start the engine without the drivebelt on?

as far as i see it only drives the powersteering pump and alternator so should be ok?

if i can start it without the belt then i can see if it still makes the noise. if it doesnt then i know its the belt.

ok, its nothing to do with the auxillary drive belt.

i've just started it without the belt and it still made the same noise

i'm guessing its the starter motor then?

sounds like cam belt tenchener pully or belt that slack its hitting the cover when ticking over

i've got one thing sorted. the high pitched noise was the starter motor. got that fixed today.

the other noise seems to be something to do with the timing belt. when i push slightly on the cover the noise changes and i can feel it vibrating so i'm pretty sure thats what it is.
