Time for a change i think.
I need to run a server for downloads, web server and a constant Internet conection.
I have a pc i use for a workstation and i am getting a laptop to use all over the house.

Windows xp ive managed to setup 2 machines through mine pretty easy to share the connections.
Playing WOW on one and mate surfing for porn an music on other lol
as for file an web server youll probably need additional software which you could possibly get for any pc. lunix type ones but if you dont know how to use em then dont bother. ive not touched that OS myself so wouldnt ave clue how easy it is. i know my friend runs something similar to what you want to though. 3 pc's plus wireless link for laptop an mobiles plus xbox all connected

id stick with what you have or maybe trial installing linux on the laptop? then network that if you like it so much then migrate your desktop over unless you dont mind formatting ya current dekstop. just means relearning a whole new OS though lol

penguin is class lol!
ok...performance and reliability definately use linux.
Its all down to the type of scripting your using...php or asp?
Are you wanting a big proper server or just something really small?

lol, someone mention me?
Oh man, where do I start with this one. Probably 20% of the Internet is devoted to this kind of discussion (with almost all the rest devoted to smut) smileys/smiley5.gif
As a desktop computer I'd probably stick to Windows atm (although I hate to say it I don't think Linux is stable enough as a desktop just yet). If you have a spare machine though install it and check it out!
If you're just planning on playing around with a Web server at home, then Windows may be the best bet. You can run IIS on it (with ASP and it's friends), and if you want to use Apache/PHP/MySQL/PostgreSQL you can also install that on Windows (best of both worlds). This setup wouldnt be the most stable I wouldnt think though.
For any real-world server application, I wouldn't use Windows.
no-one mentioned Mac? (I did here (http://www.sax-p.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=18831))
