right filled up from a shell garage few weeks back and got 360miles to the tank just before the reserve light came on(dont like letting the light come on!)

then this week i filled up at morrisons and upto now ive only had 195 miles out of it and my tank is near to where the reserve light comes on???

ive driven just the same as i always do.....just town driving mostly?
whats going on? is morrisons petrols crapper than shells? or is there something not right with my car?

either way i wont be using morrisons for petrol again :wall::wall:

sorry if this is in wrong section if it is please move

thanks :)

when you got 360 were you just town driving? driving in 'urban' areas uses more fuel than 'country' driving. gear changes, stopping and starting all the time etc

I heard petrol isnt the same wherever you buy it!! Top brand petrol (like shell optimax etc) is supposedly refined more which is what gives it the extra RON, whereas supermarket fuel has additives to increase the RON. Dont know how much difference that makes to the fuel systems in our cars though!?

Dunno whats up with your car though...other than a leak!??

they all get it from the same place.

20th December 2008, 22:05
Ye i heard that the likes of supermarkets (Tesco,Asda,Morissons etc) add different additives to make it last longer, I tend to fill up in places like texaco etc where its a bit more expensive but good fuel.

Maybe its a bit like when people water down drinks such as coke etc. Just lasts longer..

am i being silly or is this really not the same as Sarahs problem?
m17ky-u has noticed more miles?

the supermarkets do add stuff to their fuel, can remember something a while back about something tesco added to theirs that was messing up peoples cars???

i always use Shell unless 1 of the supermarkets is 2-3p a litre less.

There was a contaminated shipment of fuel at some point iirc, wasn't just tesco.

Fuel is Fuel i believe... BUT i do agree that BP or Shell do add stuff to make it better (Don't exatly know what) but was told by the cashier at shell near me that unless you have a porshe or BMW its pointless using expensive fuel coz your car won't benifit from it, its only high performance cars that do.

I always use BP.

Same price as supermarket crap and I get looots more miles.

It's FTW.

Never filled up at a propper petrol station in my life, all been supermarkets.

My mate ollie recons that Murco fuel is the best as it last longer (He had a K reg Asta and drove it into the ground so bad it was not road worthy lol)

Funny you should mention this as i filled my car up at Murco the other day as opposed to a supermarket and was gob smacked that my petrol gauge hadn't budged since. Done 60 miles and it's still showing as full.

TBH mate, my girlfriend lives in Luton which is 19.2 miles way...

I can go 1 of 2 ways.. A6 or get on at J13 and off at J12 on the M1

My fuel gauge dosn't budge untill i have a cold start up in the morning. (38.4Miles round trip)

I rekon i get to G/f's house and back on about 8 quid max (Depending how i drive)

supermarket fuel is much "dirtier" literally, when i put tesco fuel into a can i see lumps of black and crap in it and its not consistent consistency if that makes sense and other brands like bp etc are much cleaner and better for your engine. i always use shell and other brands like that and the ultimate stuff is amazing i get 10 or 15 more mpg out of it in my metro. would strongly advise against supermarket fuel.

a mate of mine has realised that supermarket fuel although cheaper gets him less economy for some reason, could be a possibility there also.

right just filled up at shell...... and it was full to the top...... as far as the needle can go..... went to asda and home (10 miles) and not the needle is at the bottom of the top white marker if you know what i mean?? does that seem right???

just gonna leave it for now and see how many miles i got to this full tank!

i might just have a strange needle lol!

kcsaxo
21st December 2008, 14:20
might have a fuel leak by the sounds of it. that distance from the top-to-bottom of the mark is at least 3mm worth of travel so i would at a guess make it 25miles worth of fuel.

Even if I noticed a differance, I would blame my heavy foot and just assume I had been driving a little bit quicker this week or whatever

Ive noticed the difference in petrol quality loads of times. I kept on getting the 5p vouchers for tesco and using them, it definatly does not last as long as texaco, shell etc. My car seems slower on tesco petrol too.

I'd rather pay 1p a litre more but have it last noticably longer tbh !

kcsaxo
21st December 2008, 14:33
go near the fuel neck at the rear-right wheel and sniff for petrol, thats the easiest way.

another thing is the next time you start your car, take a look at the gauge as short trips seem to show the car using more fuel. but after a short stop the fuel seems to rise again as it has had time to settle.

stompin-sarah
21st December 2008, 14:36
aww thanks kc ill have a look and a sniff! hmmmm? gonna go out and check it now and also turn it on see where the needles at now! :)

well had a look and a smell and also started the car up....... no sight or smell of petrol anywhere?? and the needles still in the same place!

whens the last time you had a full service? oil change / oil filter / spark plugs / air filter / tyre pressures? all can contribute to bad fuel economy if theres no leaking fuel. do you have any induction kits etc they won help either.

good question that! no induction kits or anything...its just standard....however the car had no service history when i bought it(september) only been driving it since 20th oct thou as thats when i passed my test..... however im taking it for a good service after xmas

hopefully the garage can fix the problem if there is one!

now that you mention it, i get horrid fuel economy on tescos own. Im not even bulling, i did a motorway run to manc a few weeks back with just over half a tank and it used up just under a quarter getting there! I normally use sainsburies which lasts a bit longer even if i drive a bit quick!

Petrol is different. My 'lude would get way better MPG out of BP Ultimate than any other fuel.

Cars always return less MPG during winter IMO.

Just filled up at Shell, was going to morrisons but this thread made me go with the more expensive option. Thanks!

All the same imo.

And unless you can brim the tank, then drive exactly the same places in the same conditions as you did with another petrol. You'll never be able to accurately compare them in all fairness. Too many things affect MPG.

But getting 100 miles different out of a full tank, i'd say you've got a problem lol.

Yeh lol.

I put £35 in my westcoast last week (texaco) and ive got 310miles so far, Going to need to fill up again tomoz..:P
