tomorrow i'm going to attempt to fix a problem with the timing belt. to do so i need to remove the right side engine mount.
haynes says to use a crane to take the weight of the engine but i dont have one. is there another way i can support it from underneath without damaging the engine?
its £55 to hire a crane so i'd rather do without if i can.
i'd rather buy one but i need it tomorrow.
any ideas?

you can use wood and a jack
but a crane is better

at work experience i helped take the head of this old laguna thing and had to take the top left mount off to get to some parts we had to suuport it by jackking from the bottom of engine with a peice of wood between jack and engine

where would i support it?
is the sump strong enough or do i need to find another point?

the sump will usually take the weight of the motor

iirc i supported in on the sump, probably not the best thing to do but it worked ok for me

An axle stand/Trolley jack with a big piece of wood to even the weight over the sump always works.
The transmission mount supports the other side of the engine so you should be fine.
