i dont want to sound stupid but what is the point in polishing a car and spending so much time just to get it shit up again, i wash my car like once a week but dont bother with polish or anything like that

youve only got to do it once a year. then keep it waxed up
people that keep polishing it by hand every few weeks though are wasting their time imo

wax is a wax you put on to protect your finish from polishing. it adds protection aswell for you paint.
as you have no idea its best for you to read threads on here or have a look on detailing world to get a true insight.

surely you should be asking your uncle.
polish gives a deep shine and protects paintwork

The point is, that after you have spent several hours working on it, you know every inch of you car personally. And can stand back and think to yourself, damm that looks good. And then when you drive it, people look and also think, damm thats a nice looking car.

Agreed. My car looks like shite when its dirty, *dodges predictable 106 joke :p* but when it's recently been cleaned it just looks awesome.
Makes you proud of your motor :)

Could be just like asking whats the point of modifying a car to then go on to sell it....
If you're into the whole cleaning malarky,(keep looking at Detailing World, wont be long ;)) then you start to see the difference between a car thats washed with a sponge, single bucket and dried with a chamois, to one thats cleaned with a wash mitt, two buckets, polished two or three times a year and kept well waxed. You start to notice stuff like swirl marks, and how glossy and 'wet' the paint looks. :)
