At first thought it was the battery a the battery failed a battery test so changed that.
Been fine for over a month now when i go to start it you hear it try to start then it just keeps trying over and over (if you keep the key turned) until you stop.
Any ideas, is it the alternator?
If it is the alternator wheres the best place to get one form?
How Much?
and how hard to fit

Keep checking the water level in your battery.

it isn't the battery!
The battery is new and is known to work. just over night it won't start.
all i can think of is
Alternator
Starter Motor
Earth fault.
If anyone has any knowledge on the VTR engine please advise
Thanks

Are you saying it turns the engine over until it stops ie canes the battery? Is so defo not the battery or alternator but indicating you have a spoarks or fuel problem. If the starter motor is turning the engine over its not that either. If it starts when warm after getting it going I'd look down the electrical side first starting with HT leeads as overnight these may get damp and if faulty you could be losing spark here.

Cheers mate. the best way to explain is you get in put the key wait for the airbag light to go out then go to start. for a sec it sounds like it's going to start then just keeps trying for the duration you have the key turned. Obviously i don't sit there with the key turned for ages. just won't seem to fire up.

OK so the engines turning but not firing. As above I'd start looking at the sparks side, cheapest options first being the HT leads, possibly looking at a coil pack problem if that isn't it. If you've a code reader read the fault codes if any and that would point to any sensors. Also a freebie is ECU reset (disconnect battery for couple of hours and then reconnect), no harm and only good but I doubt thats your problem. Also just check under the hood that all electrical connectors to sensors are pushed well home and not corroded, a splash of WD40 on them does no harm.

Thanks Bud
I need to check if it's the fuel pump. will try a few times to see if i can hear it prime up.
If it doesn't i'll check the HT leads and plugs etc then go down the fuel pump route.

sounds like the spark side if it fires then dont make any attempt to start after that, what year is your vtr?

sounds exactly like the fuel pump mate mine went in feb last year cost me £260
i think the mechanics saw me coming :wall:

Ok guys. Been busy today fitting a new inlet manifold (see other post)
But manged to put some jump leads on the car let for a min or so and fired up straight away? it is a new battery about 2 months old give or take so am i looking at a new altenator??

i had a faulty battery once it does happen even on new ones take the battery back to where you got it from and get them to test it they usually come with a gaurentee got nothing to loose and as i say it does happen

I don't iunderstand why you think its the alternator? If the battery turns the engine over and it didn't catch it was sparks or fuel. Fully charge your battery off car get charging measured should be I believe 13.xxxxx volts somebody??)

The car won't start when sat on the drive. But when you jump it it starts. So i jumped it then drove it all ok. Pull up turn off leave for 5 mins go to start and it won't. To me i'd say the alternator hasn't been charging the battery whilst driving it?
Me jumping it bypasses the alternator so it's obviously sparking and fueling ok.
Anyone?

Correct, to test the alternator you need to see how many amps its giving out but you cant just test this with a mutlimeter. if you test the battery while the engines running there should be about 14volts at the battery, if the voltage is only 12v and or dropping then the battery is not been charged. but just make sure your battery light comes on with the engine off and ignition on, becuase if that bulb blows it will also stop the alternator from charging.

Cheers mate
Picking up an alternator/battery testor tomorrow so will know more then
will bare that in mind good shout bud (if that bulb blows it will also stop the alternator from charging.)

STARTER MOTOR mate
managed to get a spare day to get on it properly checked battery terminals for volts etc and the alternator was charging it. Checked earth too.
Mate do me a favour
Get a multimeter (volt meter) and put it across your battery terminals(ENGINE OFF)will be as dont start
will be around the 12v mark. Get someone to watch it. Go to start the car and for a split second the voltage will drop to approx 10-11v then when the engine fires up will jump to around 14v
This is what happened to me. When volt meter was on battery reading around 12v and i tried to start the voltage went to 0
Concluded that the starter motor was pulling the voltage and because it wasn't kicking in it wasn't putting the volatge back (making a circuit)
Went to scrappy new starter motor fitted it all ok starts better than ever
Let me know how you get on. If you need advice on starter motor fitting or anything just ask bud
