2am last night i was coming home and heard a strange noise while on the m25. i was doing between 72-77 mph contantly from junction 8 til clackett lane services when i heard a very stange noise which i could only describe sounds like the noise thats made when you rub your finger on a wet window, like a higher pitched humming noise.

the noise only happened at this speed at about 3100-3250rpm at light throttle (5th gear).

the noise went away if i floored the throttle but came back once i came off. i changed down into 4th too and it went away.

i wasnt sure if it might have been somehting to do with the steering so i did a bit of weaving but there was nothing strange there.

once i reached the A21 it disappeared.

the car is a 1999 VTR with 55k miles

any ideas??

Must have been the M25 mate, if it disappeared at the A21.
I will check if mine does it when I next go along there.. smileys/smiley14.gif

Other than that, All I can suggest is it may be something to do with the gas somewhere.
Accelerator cable, but that would prob do it throughout the range.
Weird one that.

i was along that stretch of the M25 twice over the last week & i didn't notice any unusual noises (apart from my loose exhaust!)

Or dont speed and and stick to 70. Nah im only joking. Try recreating the sound at different speeds doing different things like how you accelerate or something.

Ecoslion,
Did ya have loads of weight in the car? Or even a tad more than usual? Its possible your getting early signs of CV joint / driveshaft. I had exactly the same. I regreased all concerned around the drivers front wheel and it went away........ for a week and then driveshaft is screaming like a bitch. Changing it today.
