ive just had a compression test done on my p reg saxo 1.1 and its come back with these readings 1=115 2=55 3=95 4=85 which means one of my valves has blown causing my car to misfire and burn oil basically it makes my car run shit i dont even bother going to start it in the morning as it starts shit on warm days because of my blown valve its not getting its full power even though a car can run on 3 cylinders.is there any ideas on my best options do i need a new cylinder head and gasket or can i just get the valve replaced and how much will this cost.

is the reading in psi, im assuming so. cylinder 2 looks the worst but i think your jumping the gun with saying its a valve i very much doubt that at all. if a valve had gone it would missfire but not burn oil wheres the oil coming from? sounds like the headgasket or the oil control ring on the piston has broke. to check for the piston problem do the compression test again but squirt 3 or 4 pumps of oil into the cylinders, if the pressure increases then its the piston or pistons, if not your looking towards the head.

from that i would of said headgasket dont jump to conclusions without investigating more lol , and would be cheaper to get a replacment engine than farting about with a fucked one eg repolacing the head and valves ect die say about £50 for a reasonable 1.1 engine if you can fit it yourself

you wont be able to tell for definate without removing the head

tbh i dont no if your doing the test yourself or a garage? either way if you could get a cylinder leak test done it gives you a much better idea of the problem e.g rings, valves, headgasket, cracked head ect.... only takes 10mins to do if you can get hold of the kit to do one. or half hour labour at a garage...

i had compression done at garage and seems to think the valve has blown so he was going to get a new cylinder head and gasket but its far to much money.i would rather replace the blown valve and skim the gasket if thats gone but i cant see my head gasket has gone as theres no water in my oil and thers no bad smoke coming out the exhaust it just basically misfires ive just had an oil filter change a new coil pack a battery and new spark plugs and the garage said its definately a valve worn but im trying to get my car back to shape using the cheaper option.HELP.

Its a simple job to replace and regrind the valves, you just need a haynes a basic guide, machine shop to skim the minimum amount to make sure its not bowed, head gasket kit (so the valve stem oil seals can be replaced when the head is off) and new head bolts if you want to buy them.

this will cost you around 50 quid which is quite reasonable. valves are not expensive your talking pennys, the head skim i get done for 25 quid at my local reconditioning place. borrow a socket set and a torque wrench and ur laughing

just to add, if its correct the valve has blown, regrinding is the essential process to stop loss of compression as the air escapes when the valve is closed.

but still would it not be easyer and cheeper to pic up a replacment engine and striaght swap.. thers plenty around

depends on the individuals mechanical knowlwdge, id prefer to do the head gasket with relapping the valves an replacing at the same time. the probem with cheap parts from scrapyards / ebay is you dont know the history of a lot of the parts which means it could blow up the day after you put it in or not even work properly at all.

this happened to me not long ago on a 106 1.1 i had. it totally blew up so i had to get a new engine, when all the time and effort was wasted as the big end bearings shattered after a week of it being in there
