Hey guys, where would you recommend buying a laptop?? it needs to be as cheap as possible and requirements are windows, CD/DVD drive, windows office (probs need to buy that after??). Its for my dad to use at his shop he wants it to keep databases on and to also get it hooked up to broadband?

Thanks guys,

Dell are having a sale throughout their line.
Also PC World do a weekly "buy this model" thing that are cheap as.

DONT GET THE £170 FLASH HARD DRIVE LAPTOPS.
They're shit.

id say pc world and try push a bargain with dogy signs n stuff in ther, when i went to buy mine about this itme last year, ther was a sign saying free laptop bag with every laptop purchaced, and it was for 15" screen laptops but the sign was next the 17 inches , and the guy says the sign shouldnt have been ther, so my mums boyfriend got mardy, and they siad look if we had some 17" laptop bags in the store we would give you one for your troubles, so i said thats horse shit and found one, the stor manager came and we ended up getin the laptop with a antler bag for free :D, pretty good pc tbh was about £399 crap make advent but its on 12 + hours a day and not broke yet, few little things like the rubber feet things on the bottome have come loose a few times and one of the lid catches have broke but its been a good workhorse, i was expecting to replace it by now :)

Wouldn't even consider buying a new pre-built system for something as simple as that. If all he needs from it is a database, just look around for old PC's or laptops, or even just random salvage which you can put together.

No point spending £250+ on a laptop if he just wants to use Access.

Comet. Very well priced, its where I got my Vaio from. Plus their after-sales customer support is very good, quickly sorted out a few preliminary niggles with my system over the phone.

Many comet stores have demo's on display, so you can have a quick play about before you decide to buy.

Never buy from PC World they are awful, just find a mate who knows about computers and get onto Ebay. I build home PCs for friends and family all the time and buy laptops when needed for them too. You can pick up a laptop to do databases for very little as it doesnt require much processing or memory power. Try to stick with known brands for laptops it makes a big difference. Dell are ok, but for work computers go for HP/Compaq or IBM.
