I am now doing a lot of miles (400+ miles a week) so it is time for a more economical car :homme:. But I still want a car I can have fun in, which will handle well and have a some good torque.

The two cars which I have been contemplating are -

1) Seat Leon Cupra R TDI 150
2) Vauxhall Astra (vxr shape) tdi

Now I don't know many other diesels which will have some good performance and 40+ mpg. This is where you lovely saxo owners come into play :y:

A friend of mine already has one and I know it is basically a golf underneath, but I am quite badgest. So I couldn't have one.

Good cars though

I kind of miss my fabia. Would have a golf 150 this time though.

And remapping sucks dong, standard all the way.

You might know Alex, is the aniversary edition mk 4 golf tdi the same engine that is in the fabia vrs?

Standard power is good, but I couldn't say no to an increase in mpg and a few more torques as well. But not so much that the standard clutch couldn't cope with the increase in power.

Fabia vRS are very decent motors Vin, if you let the badge put you off you're missing out..

Alex, whats wrong with remapping? on the 1.9 TDi engine it makes an awesome difference, These VAG turbos have ridiculous potential trapped beneath conservative factory maps.

Vinny- other diesels, Focus TDCi is meant to be decent enough, and I believe the Mk4 Golf does share the same engine as the Fab.

Well I am not one to not give something a second chance, so I will have to arrange a date in a test drive when I have some more money put together for a new car.

I can't really say I am a fan of the focus, apart from the new RS that I saw at the Autosport show at the Birmingham NEC. Holy crap it is nice.

If only I could find a job in motorsport (preferably rallying) that would pay, as then I could afford to run an ep3 type R. The dire state that the economy is in is now starting to effect me. It has turned me into a penny watcher/diesel lover

Why does everyone think you'll get an increase in MPG from mapping? lol

It's bollocks, everyone on briskoda reported a drop in economy, often up to 10mpg depending on map.

The crappy standard vRS turbos(unless you get one with the garret which is rare old models) blow up all the time, more so when running over a bar and a half of boost lol Also makes them really smoky. Then the clutch needs sorting, and it puts more strain on the very expensive to replace gearbox...

The anniversary gti is the 150 engine which is different and quite a bit better.

Saw a std one of these going round Brands, was worryingly quick round the twisties

Oh right. Well I was speaking from the information passed onto me via people I have spoken to who have remapped their tdi's (none of them were vrs owners though).

Leon FR+ 150
Golf GT-TDi 150

Driven loads of both and they're amazingly good cars

The computer readout can become more or less accurate with remapping, so i'd ignore indicated MPG and go with full tank calculations, and to be fair you're not going to tune a 130bhp car to 160-180bhp without using more fuel, expecially all of that black smoke, that's partially burnt diesel!

Isn't the black smoke partially unburnt diesel, which is caused by the engine overfueling briefly?

Long time no speak mate.

I could do with a run around... Does it have tax/mot?

Diesels don't run throttle plates, they run full air flow into the engine at all throttle positions, throttle is determined by amount of fuel injected, to accelerate you have to inject enough fuel to increase the power output, to get the turbo to spin you need to put in enough fuel to get the turbo spinning then the turbo supplies loads more air then you chuck more fuel in and so on and so forth. So aside from cruising and being on boost you'll be getting plenty of unburnt diesel spewing out of the back! More so when you want more power as you need to get more boost from the turbo, more fuel is chucked in and until the turbo is fully up to speed you get more smoke, more wasted fuel...

There is loads of Diesels out there mate.

The TDCi Ford Engine, is actually an HDi engine underneath - the 1.6 I have in my 307 is the same one that goes in the Focus and HDi's are bullet proof. If I was to buy diesel again, I'd go for a VAG to be honest - they are a lot more refined engines. The Astra's are nice though, could get the SRi 150bhp Diesel.

You can't really go wrong with any of the VAG diesels in my opinion. As luke says as well the Hdi's do seem strong as well!

I'd buy David's though.

I am not quite ready to part with the c2 yet. I take it you're a3 is the tdi model then?

I will take a look at the Ford TDCI's then. If I am honest, I think I am pretty much set on a Seat Leon Cupra R 150 tdi now. They have come down a lot in price (thankyou economic downturn for that one), so I have to get the pennies together now

Leons are good. But the Cupra R version is only a 1.8 Turbo petrol, you'll get a Cupra TDi 150 I believe. :y:

Another derv thread woop.

Right a remap will keep standard MPG...should improve it definately... However what you are probably missing is once people have a remap, they will generally drive there car a little bit harder as the power is a whole new ball game :D.

From a VTS i would go either VXR TDI or Seat Ibiza CUPRA TDI if you want a 3door hatch. (my car was only a few lengths behind a petrol VXR with exhaust mods)

The Cupra ibiza has all of the toys, big brakes, FMIC etc.

Theyre piss easy to get decent power from.

I have an FR 130TDI running a decent amount of power, i am good with my clutch control... but i will give my car some welly from 2,000 RPM if i fancy it (this is what your not suposed to do with standard clutch)

Though i have a smooth P-Torque map running 312lb/s torque and my flywheel/clutch etc is fine.

Power is very impressive, will fend off vtecs (some), 306's, (keep with new megane sports) etc Will wave byebye to c*ntish driving jags on the m5 who want to race you at top end ;).

Freelander Td4 FTW

there great on the m'way - standard 112Bhp after a remap 140Bhp standard 260lb/ft after remap 330lb/ft £299.95

not bad imo get a 3year old one for bout £6200 and you can go off piste and have some great fun with them !!!!

If you want a Leon, go for the Leon FR with the Cupra bodykit and wheels.

Same as 'Craigs' on here.
