Well i was ment to go college last year lol, but wanted a year out.
so now its time to decide wat course to do and im stuck on 3 courses
either:
Beauty/makeup
Hairdressing
Or Car spraying (which i seem pretty interested in)
Im going to go up to the open day next week and have a look
whats ur opinions?

First and last one use the same tools, so you could take either and swap at a later date
Seriously though, the sprayings obviously the tricky one, so suss it out, if you get a feel for it then go for that

If I were too judge you on that, I would say that your interest in car spraying may just be a thing you have now? Would ask yourself what can you see yourself doing for a career, eg. 9-5 job doing... [insert job here]
Also depends if you're looking to go onto higher education I guess?

Only you can really choose wat to do tbh because its going to be your life once completed. Good luck with whatever choice you go with
EssexHoney
13th January 2009, 08:28
It depends what you see yourself doing in like 10 years time. If you think that you will be happy spraying cars as a living then do that, but if you think that you will have a longer happier career as a hairdresser/beautican then do that.
No one can really tell you what to do with your future, you need to think long and hard about it yourself :)

Beauty/makeup
Hairdressing
Or Car spraying (which i seem pretty interested in)
1. Beauty/makeup - Hard to break into once you are qualified.
2. Hairdressing - Get saturday work making Teas and sweeping at a local salon.
3. Would need to find somewhere that would want an apprentice.
Really it all comes down to: "Are you fit?"
A Beauty/Makeup/Hairdressing place uses you to advertise how good they are.
Ugly people, however skilled, dont sell their product/service as well and as a result are hired when there are fitter candidates.
No offence. Just is the case.
Car Spraying though. Thats about the quality of the product and the recommendations of word of mouth.
Pics are required either way of yourself... x

It isn't just saying wat though. If the OP's work is as slipshod as her written English, would you entrust her to do some work for you?
If you were a prospective employer would you employ her when there are many others out there who are able to string a coherent sentence together? I realise it's only a forum, and I would like to think that the OP has a sound grasp of written English, although the evidence produced in her first post does seem to contradict this.
In real life, I see 10, maybe 20 CVs a week, without exception, those that are littered with text-talk, misspellings and poor grammar are filed in the bin. The employment market is tough, and will only get tougher - don't disadvantage yourself because you will only have yourself to blame.

Before you get a foot in the door, you generate a first impression of yourself.
Even while people read this, they are making their opinion on the person behind the text.
Vidal is methodical and structured. Paragraphs are used and a signature, even though a stand addition to the forum, is manually added and "signed".
Others may be annoyed by this, the most of you shouldn't. Being able to read what someone means so much time and helps their situation 10x as quick. Trust.

Think which would influence me most on my decision, would be the future stability of the job.
With this 'credit crunch' getting worse, people are going to have less disposable income to waste on beauty products, getting nails done etc. Hair dressing a little less effected, where as spraying could be a little more stable.

Car spraying may seem a really good idea now.... but after a while it just becomes another job. Atleast with hairdressing, you get to talk to customers all day so there is a pretty big degree of varience in your day.
Beauty is another good course to do, but if your area is anything like Gloucester, half the people i know who have done a beauty course can't find work too easily...
Make a careful choice is all i would 100% advise

Indeed.
Bear in mind that if you're going into a career, make sure it something you can do for a fair while. Spraying would get old quickly. Beauty is over subscribed unless you're really amazing. Hairdressing is a skill, and not an easy one to master. It's also the easiest one to start your own business with.
As Leckie said, do your GCSEs, see how they come out. If you can do some A-levels as they really help in the future. It also saves going into work too early (I didn't get into my career until I was 22)

Sorry John_1.1i for suggesting you dont get sex from your girlfriend and resort to using sax-p for pics... x
But the fact stands:
Hairdressing is a good trade.
Beauty has too many option extras - waxing, make up etc that when you apply they decide they want them too but you dont have them so they take someone else.
Car spraying is pap in the long run and with modfying going down, it will just be insurance jobs.

I've read up on sprayers only being on £10 ph full qualified etc though. Personally for me there isn't enought prospectus in there and making 40k would mean a good 83 hours a week working, that's before tax.
Personally, I can't see myself working 10-11 hour days when I have kids in 15-20 years. Where as a senior (head of studio etc) graphics designer could be closer to 100k a year depending on what sector their in with less working hours.
Something that should be thought about.

Get yourself back into education and get a degree. Look at how the world markets are at the moment, and look for something that will be in demand in a couple of years time when you have finished a degree.
I think you would get bored of being in the cold and covered in paint and beauty/hairdressing is a seriously saturated market.
Look into doing a degree that involves the environment and sustainability. Key buzz words at the moment.

Overrated if you get one in something shit yes. You have to do your research and identify a subject where large multi-national companies require experience.
Experience matters yes, but with a degree i will enter at a higher level.

Its not the be all and end all, if you show you know business and have the ability to do the job properly. Its just widely accepted that a degree is a qualification that can open more doors for you, however once in the worl place the degree means fuck all and if you dont do the work properly they soon find someone capable even if on papaer they are not so

I think if we looked at a sample of MD's/CEO's and people on the boards of most companies there would be more with degrees. Having a degree opens more doors and it opens them faster for the majority of people.
Of course if you cannot do the job they will move you out of it, that goes for every job for everybody.

Of course if you cannot do the job they will move you out of it, that goes for every job for everybody.
I beg to differ, you generally find alot of MDs are those who started work early on in life, worked their bollocks off, got an idea set up a company then because of the knowlege they gained expanded.
Im at univesity, however all this I have a degree so means im better than the rest is bollocks in my book, There are some jobs which you will require specialist training granted, but even something in accounting for example you only get a slightly easyer long term path on ACCA qualifications, at the end of the day a degree isnt the be all and end all, and if you think you are going to come out of uni and fall into a job thats quite nieve

Most company founders don't have degrees, most second or third chairmen certainly do have degrees or higher.
Richard Branson wouldn't have got anywhere if he'd gone and got a degree, he'd have had to get a job etc. As it was he had nothing to lose so he started a company and ran with it

HAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAA.
No.
My dads an MD.
Has a HNC at most.
My mums an MD.
She qualified with an O-Level in Hotel running.
My Step-dads an MD and has an HNC in refrigerant engineering which he did while running his company.
"yeah wel they're probably all one man band"
My parents company turns over £10-15m a year
My Step dads does £8m-10m
Degrees mean fuck all unless in medicine.
The most it proves is that you can dedicate yourself to something for 3 years+
But has the conertations that you love partying and drinking.

Of course a degree isnt the 'be all and end all', however i feel that you get more chances and responsibility in a company quicker with a degree.
Im not sure anyone is naive enough to think that a degree will allow you to fall into a job, but a good degree from a good university still stands for a lot, especially now as more companies look to hire less people.
Ryan

now companies are trying to hire less people, on the job experience seems more important than paperwork.
In the finaincal situation companies dont want to be spending money training someone if they can get someone whos got on the job experience and isnt waving paper around demanding a higher salary.
Like we say there are some jobs where its key to have a degree but not many, and even then on the job experience is soon worth alot more.

I dunno tbh i think id rather do beauty. im guna av 2 wait till sep to start college but its all good cus got money coming in atm
sorry just to cut up the degree fight here...
I'm a beauty therapist, trained three years ago.. and i gotta tell you, from my course I was on of 30 potential therapists only about 8 are still in beauty...
its really hard to get into once you are qualified, as you have no experience.. its kinda a catch 22! which a shame for all those budding therapists!
plus, its shite money, unless you own your own salon/rent a sucessful room/go into training other therapists..
and to piss on your chips even more... our salon has at least 3000 clients on our books... and we arent even making any money so jobs will most deffo be lost! imo...go into hair! x

Real jobs though....
The point is, a degree will get you that first interview in life.
But everything else is experience.
Someone highly recommeneded that knows the industry is 10x more desireable than a long haired student with an ipod in one ear.

about £10k for the first year... it really depends where and how much experience you have...
second year will go up as you have more experience, but again, you will earn more self employed, but the risks are higher..ESPECIALLY when you are first starting out with no clients..very risky!
sorry rem..what u mean real jobs?

sorry rem..what u mean real jobs?
Im joking.
Most people sit behind a desk and earn retardily large amounts of money for literally copy and pasting all day (any consultant in the building industry for example)
As long as i have the money to play, i dont mind working.

Overrated if you get one in something shit yes. You have to do your research and identify a subject where large multi-national companies require experience.
Experience matters yes, but with a degree i will enter at a higher level.
Not always the case. I am 18... training to be a Quantity Surveyor.
Lad just came here from uni. I have been here one year.... he is 23 and done 3 years uni.
I am on double his pay. Because he has no experiance. You talk to any MD in construction, engineering etc, they will say experience over a piece of paper that says you can do a job any day of the week.
I would however totally suggest a degree if you want to do something in music, medicine or environmental sciences.
Beauty of my job is, the company put me through 3 years of college and a 2 year uni course... so i have the experience BEFORE i go to uni!

Experience > Qualifications
That is the rule.
Degrees are only important for getting into industries where they are required anyway. eg. Medicine, Forensics etc.
And even then, you go into the industry as a low paid Junior, not a high flying consultant.
Experience. Its shit loads better than something you can buy on ebay.

Who do you work for rem you MASSIVE clunge?
Currently.
I work in "Sales & Marketing" for a Building Management Company called Eton Associates Ltd.
Basically I price incoming enquiries and get looked after by suppliers and in return take out the people that send enquiries into us.
I've been doing it for 3 weeks now and its a learning curve but quickly i've noticed its two things.
Bullshit and smiles.
Thats it. x
