Going to work this morning about 7.45, went round a corner caught some ice, car starts twitching, couldnt straighten up at all, went sideways, backwards and ended up in the hedge, rear windscreen shattered on impact. Car was at a steep angle but manged to get across and out the passenger side. At first it didn't look too bad, I just thought new boot and rear windscreen.
A lady pulled up and asked if I was OK and then gave me a lift home. Then got a neighbour with a Freelander to try and pull the car out, except it was too far in and the road was still icy so wouldnt have got any grip. We ended up using a tractor to pull it out.
It started OK and was kind of drivable, except something was catching on the rear right wheel, so that wouldnt have lasted at all. Left it at the side of the road in a safe spot and took out all my valuables. Went home, phoned NFU Mutal to arrange recovery, was sorted within about 15 minutes and a recovery lorry turned up about 45 minutes later and took it to Marshalls In Bury St Edmunds. Quite sad seeing it go past on the back of a lorry.
Anyway, Im OK, just a bit shaky. Im guessing its a write off. Hope I can find something cheap to run and is fair on insurance.

Oh hai boot floor.... possible write off mate.
Unlucky.

14th January 2009, 12:44
Ouch, does look like the boot etc will be bent so prob be a write off, main thing is nobody was hurt :)
Ben
14th January 2009, 12:44
Glad your ok mate :y: Is the boot floor crumpled and bent?

Bad news matey ... Almost did something similar to this the other day.
Least you're ok I suppose.

A question, if the boot floor is creased in any way is it a write off ?? :ponder:
Luke
14th January 2009, 12:47
That's a write off mate, without a doubt.
Glad you are okay though, that's the main thing and metal can be replaced. The roads are so bad this year too.

Luke
14th January 2009, 12:50

Weakens structure of the car I guess.
I presume that's the case with it been creased, I wouldn't wanna drive a car with that issue tbh.
Peejous
14th January 2009, 12:51
how though :S
Car would need jigging to get the floor straight and all the wheels back to the position that they should be.
Which isn't cheap.

im glad your okay fellow saxo driver, but your thread title seems to be deeming all of us to crash. which is not happening to me!!! :/

Value of the car AGAINST cost of repairing it to a road worthy condition.

Because have a bump like that and it creases the floor in a Saxo. They are VERY easy to write them off from behind, I have seen them written off from someone hitting behind at 15/20mph.
Serious.

Most insurers will write them off for that, due to costs and the fact that to properly repair it it needs a new shell

Cheers guys. Paid £995 for it back in September. What actually happens with the insurance now? If I get a new car, can I just transfer the policy over or will I lose my 1 year NCB? Also, how much of an increase c/would I be looking at?
All for arguments sake, lets say it is a write off.
They offer me £500 for it. Should I take it or strip it? All 5 tyres are in good condition, probably get other parts off it too. Ive got no idea what parts or what they're worth so Ill be on here for advice anyway.
Back to real life.
Like my mum said to me earlier, would you want to drive it again anyway, even if it was repaired? No, I probably wouldnt. Oh, filled up with petrol last night, so theres a full tank in it too. Was going to head into Stowmarket on Saturday as I need a new battery. Theres also a brand new clutch in the box that needed fitting too, worth £60. May sell, may return. Extreme way of getting a day off work anyway.

14th January 2009, 12:59

Get paid out, buy it back for peanuts, strip it down, sell bits.
Best option.

Damn, saw the first two photos and thought youd got away with it, then you see the back end, bugger! Without the amount of crashes Ive seen on here over the last month I swear the value of Saxos must be going up soon, becoming a rarity!

Thats all they have atm thats within my price range. Cant afford a VT really, although it would be nice. Will check Piston Heads too. Then again, Im actually asking myself if I want another Saxo or not. Tried a few 106s before but didnt like them.
Prickle
14th January 2009, 13:46
not a bad choice there tbh :)
When i looked on auto trader i didnt see any of them!
Chr15
14th January 2009, 13:54
What price range and distance did you choose?
Found a '92 Pug 106 for £500, its only 10 mins away. Same place I got the Saxo from actually.

He's got a couple of newer models, but poorly priced when considering miles for their age IMO:

Amiee's boot floor creased up when her mate went into the rear of her and the mango 1.4 was not written off (I think). She did have it repaired.
As for stripping the 1.1, if you are able to remove the engine yourself and it's a good runner then yes go for it, but the value of scrap has gone down so much that if you don't sell the shell you're going to need to depart with your own money.
Dependent on how much the boot has crumpled I personally think it'll only be around a £800 repair... baring in mind thats near the price of what you paid I wouldn't bother... and my mum said the same thing 18 months ago I answered the same way. ;)

Thats it for AT (well, whats within my price range and distance Im willing to travel). Ill hit PH soon and also check local papers.
There were several Corsas and Fiestas but they're just poor cars. Couple of Puntos, but no milage was given. Also someof the old style Clios, but what are they like?

The Metro? Its actually got a better spec in terms of alloys and electronics than my Saxo, four years older and about the same mileage lol.
Ive no idea on what all these other cars are like as Ive not had any oppertunities to drive them or know many people who have had them, so any advice will be appreciated.

I reckon someones going to remake the metro and it will go the same way the Fiat 500 and Mini went lol (fashion accessories)

unlucky man, is it worth claiming for that amount?
Chr15
14th January 2009, 22:44
Ideally Id get a new car and just transfer the policy over, paying any differences and hope to keep my 1 years NCB. I know its not much but it helps when you've got other things to pay. Get the feeling it wont work like that.
LeeM
14th January 2009, 22:59
if you claim off insurance your not going to get no claims discount! i assume you're in the process of claiming as you used insurance to recover. i think once they pay out for a write off the policy will be ended as well.
also that metro you posted will be pretty fast, i'd be looking for a vtr around £1k, plenty about

We'll see in the next few days when I hear back from them. I might be jumping too far ahead but judging what Ive seen and people have said I doubt it. Ive been told to leave the Metro well alone as the suspension on it is different and just crap.

Phoned the garage today as I havnt heard anything. Their main inspector is off ill so nothings been done. Im going there in the morning to get what I couldnt take Wednesday (that includes my full tank of petrol). Also asked about a C-Car, found out they dont have any available at the moment. Will try to sort that out too as I need to go into college/uni on Monday but only for a couple of hours.

Just got back from the garage. Got my radio, mats and rear wiper (it was new!). Wasnt allowed to take out the petrol due to Health and Safety. Anyway, I got some close ups of the damage. It was standard height, you can see how much it dropped. Also see a split in the boot space in the interior photos, almost gaurenteeing a write off. Courtesy car should be sorted Monday.

Bad luck though. Hope you get paid out quick enough. What's your insurance excess?
Chr15
18th January 2009, 21:24
If anybody says 'needs lowering'...
It was standard height before to lol
Excess is all over the place in the document lol
Accidental Damage (inc £50 voluntary)
Drivers under 21 - £250
21-24 (inclusive) - £150
Other drivers - £50
Theft - £100
Glass replacement - £25 (approved), £40 (other circumstances)
Anyway, Im looking at the next car as I cant see anyway back for the current one. Ive found a 2003 VTR for £2500 (I'll try to get the price down) and still be insured for roughly the same price I was for the 1.0 lol. Still waiting for Adrian Flux to get back to me and need to ring Chris Knott and my current insurer (NFU) to see what they can do.
There was also a 106 Quicksilver (same price, £2500). Insurance around £650 woo.

I love it! :fcuk:
I finally have a car that has actual brakes! I tapped them and nearly headbutted the front windscreen they're so sharp lol. Got to 90 (or was it 60?) and got scared. Need a more quiet road somewhere. Ill get some HQ pictures at the weekend if I remember.

They were on about like for like and all that but I thought 'erm, no it aint lol' 1.0i Saxo to that Astra (must be a 2 litre?) is bit of a jump.
Just a quick question to anybody who owns/had/knows somebody:
Where the heck does the auxillary cable plug into? Theres a setting for it and also says MP3 on the front but I cant see where it goes! I prefer my iPod to the radio.

AUX is for the ipod to go into mate.
Will probably find it in the glovebox or I think it might to back on the handbrake.

Now you mention it, I think its behind/beside the handbrake. Didnt think anything of it at the time. Cheers mate.

Those astras are fucking shocking.
The brakes are overassisted, they're not good. And they overheat very easily.
The seats are very uncomfy on long journeys.
The engines are utter wank(anything under 1.8 petrol)
The handling is shocking, and the steering feel is non existant.
My only good comment about the new astra is that the stereo is alright lol And i drive a variety of them on a regular basis on long distances, so i'd know. Give me a vts any day.

I've just bought a 53 plate Astra diesel and you are totally wrong about the seats. They do a good job as seats, i like them. The steering feel is also quite good. I can feel it bouncing around all over the place giving fairly accurate information about how much understeer it currently is suffering with.
You are bang on about the rest of it though.

Personal preference i guess, i have driven to various seminars around the midlands and south west in gashtras and within about an hour i am really uncomfy. No problems with my recaros or standard vts interior! Probably done a few thousand miles in these, much rather drive foci though ;)

I agree, we're different shapes and the VTS seats really don't fit me, I have no idea how Ryan isn't cripled at his hight.
I also would rather drive a Focus. In fact, I can't figure out why I didn't buy a Focus at auction instead of the Astra. That does keep me up at night.

dave I used GTI leathers for more comfort in the spaxo.
The old vt seats were not to bad mind i did alot of milage in them originally.

I always thought the back support was too low with any seats, though oddly the GTI ones are better. That said your hight is in your legs

nah got quite a long spine really, if i dont have drivers seat a little bit 'ganster' in the saxo my head is in the roof.

Found out what my payout will be.
£995, exactly what I paid for it in the first place.
I was expecting £500-£600 so Im really pleased. I ont be buying it back though unfortunatly as I dont have anywhere to keep it.
I tested a VTS yesterday but it just felt weird. I didnt like the gear stick and was sure there was less headroom. What your used to though I guess.
