I've been recently researching into getting an Engine Conversion done. For most people the biggest obstacle is Insurance, so I thought I'd share what Info I found when I was looking to get mine done. I've just been given a quote of £645.90 on a 1.1 with a VTS Engine, along with Induction, Exhaust and Suspension changes declared. This is for a 19 year old, with 2 Years no-claims bonus (I'm not quite old enough yet though :panic:), so as you can see, a fair bit cheaper than a standard VTS would be, contrary to popular belief.
Insurers to try:
Considering Chris Knott seem not to Insure anyone under 21 fully comp (which is fair enough considering they have to make money at the end of the day), I was looking around, and found the best to be by a mile Adrian Flux.
They is who I got my quote with. They are specialist brokers, and will nearly always provide you with the best quote when doing 'Big' mods.
Here's some companies to consider (although I'm sure there are hundreds more, these are the biggest name ones)
Adrian Flux
Brentacre
Bell (although you may not get as good a quote here)
Others (If over the age of 21, Chris Knott look to be a good bet)
Points to consider:
When trying to get Insured for an engine conversion, price is not necessarily the main issue. There are other factors to consider such as "like for like" replacement or "standard" replacement. This means in the event of a crash, a part will either be replaced by the aftermarket part, as opposed to the standard part. This is particularly relevant and costly if you ruin your low milage VTS Engine in your 1.1, and end up getting a standard 1.1 engine as a replacement :n:.
No Insurer, not even Adrian Flux will Insure anyone under the age of 19 for an Engine Conversion, so this is a minimum.
Your unlikely to get any particularly good deals without 2 years no-claims. 1 year will do, but not every Insurer will want someone with only 1 years driving experience a quote on a 120bhp car, so although you will get quotes with 1 years NCB, you will get a lot more and substantially cheaper quotes with 2 years.
As a Sax-P member you get discount offered with Adrian Flux, as well as Chris Knott IIRC, so consider this when getting quotes from various places. The Flux link is activated by clicking a link on the "Links section" under "Insurance".
Add parents to quotes If your young! I cannot stress this enough. Do not put the policy in their name, this is fronting and illegal, but you are well within your rights to add them to your policy, and this usually makes quite a difference to the price of the quote.
Add in low mileage expectations. Its very unlikely a company will ever check your mileage, and there are quite big differences in the price for 15000 miles and 5000 miles. Don't put it ridiculously low, but maybe do it to the nearest 5000 (rounded down ;))
Hope this helps some people! :y:
Thanks to Jonezy for providing me with a fair bit of useful Information!
