Right, we (me & the missus) will be moving in to a new flat in the next few weeks. According to BT there is no line so we will need to pay £122.33 connection fee which i think is ALOT!!
Then my dad seems to think we will need to sign up to BT for a minimum of 12months before we can change over to someone like tiscali. Is this true? As there packages are expensive!
DAMN BT!!

You will be entered into a contract for something like 12 months which you cannot end before the 12 months is up. If you did want to end beforehand, you will have to pay a lot of money to abort the contract early

Cant you just pay the stupid connection fee and then go with another company like tiscali? As tiscalis offer is that they pay the line rental.
All BT's phone & Broadband deals a bloody expensive!
I thought about Virgin, BUT the area i cannot get there deals so they have to go through a BT line, which i dont yet have. Grrrr

I work in phones4u and we have started doing sky and virgin media
the cheapest package os 17.50 a month with your tv landline and your internet which i think is extremly good value
also you can get a HD box worth 150 for 50 at phones4u and all you do is pay 10 pound extra a month (27 all together ) for your HD cannels
if your an internet geek then virgin have the new 20 mb internet or u cna just have the 2mb per second one with unlimited access for only a feq quid a month deffo someting to look into champ

Still would need a BT line though which we dont have at the moment. If we got the line connected we will be tied in to BT for 12 months.
Is there no way around this? This sucks!!

:( Sucks to be me!
So i pay the RIP off fee and then im stuck with BT for 12 months on a ridiculous rate. I think ill sign up and then not bother with a package for 12months.
No internet for 12months!!

Your dad is right they will make you enter a 12month contract which will be more expensive for you to cancel early...Someone was tellin me something about BT owning the majority of your lines and cables as they were on the scene first, meaning they can make these stupid prices as we dont have much choice in the matter..not sure it is 100% true but makes sense lol :)

i work for bt mate
the connection charge is for installing a new line, whether it be at the house or a service point at the exchange for you. its not a bt charge its the openreach engineers charge.
if you took an 18month contract with bt, can jut have basic line rental £11.50, and get your calls through another company, but if you take it for 18 months, mention that the customer options team has offered you it for 29.99
hope this helps mate

What did they do? Did you just get BT to connect the line and then paid sky the line rental?

I've just had the same thing. It sucks! If you have an 02 mobile their broadband is pretty cheap for customers. I'm using them and have had no problems. You can spread the connection fee over your first 6 months. That's what I chose to do. I had so many problems with BT to begin with, only just got them all properly sorted!
If you sign up for paperless billing I think it brings the line rental down to £10.50 or so a month.
