View Full Version : Police and my exhaust

droopster

Got pulled over today because the copper thought my exhaust was too noisey and the main reason because it is "non standard"... I have a vehicle defect form flled out because my exhaust is non standard and need to change it to a standard one within 14 days... does anybody know if this is true and I need to change it, I am looking on the net now and cannot find much info out about it!

Thanks

As said, read above.

there are decebel limits enforced on the roads
if your deemed to be over these limits you will need to remove the exhaust system and getting a quieter one

Yeah thats right.

Same thing happened to me in my old Punto. Best think to do is go to a garage to get them to check to see if its within the legal limit, and then get it stamped.

So every car with a non standard exhaust on is a fail then, because on my pink defect form it says non standard exhaust, as the defect of the car!

Jorge-
19th January 2009, 17:16
What exhaust system do you have?

droopster
19th January 2009, 17:18
I have a 3.5 inch exit and a 2" inch custom made cat back system from a company called pipecraft!

JamesR
19th January 2009, 17:26
i have a 3" sportex, never been pulled, its not that loud or big, do the police honestly no what a standard VTR/VTS exhaust is meant to look like? and most of my noise comes from the induction anyway, which only happens over about 3000rpm, so when thers police nearby just put it in a higher gear and keep the revs low.

sammyd
19th January 2009, 17:30
got a full powerflow exhaust system ovals shape

CHIP
19th January 2009, 17:32
Mine once failed mot for exhaust being too loud. And i didnt have my manifold then.

Back then it was the testers disgression. But it seems the rules have changed.

CHIP
19th January 2009, 17:35
To fail the car on mot they'd need a standard Saxo to compare legally, reading that on page 3.

I think most people will be ok. As long as it's not a 50" cherry bomb complete with immigrants up it etc.

Prickle
19th January 2009, 17:48
cross fingers mine will be ok :panic:

for mot time, i havent been pulled over yet as i wack it in neutral when one appears....

JamesR
19th January 2009, 17:57
why though? unless it is really really loud whats the problem? why cant we have an aftermarket one which isnt loud?

TU-Tuning
19th January 2009, 18:03
Ive had that, pulled over, said my exhaust was waking up the whole neighbourhood. I pointed out it was standard, as it was at the time. He wasnt best pleased lol. Pulling me for nonsense just cause youve got nothing to do and you dont want to go home to your loveless sexless marriage

Andy_K
19th January 2009, 18:03
Magnex are quiet.

Point of an afetrmarket exhaust is that it flows better. Faster flowing gas = more noise. Also there are less restrictions in an aftermarket exhaust, so less silencing

Olly
19th January 2009, 18:13
they pulled me the other nite basicall cause they saw a modified saxo..... but the never said nething about my exhaust, and its decat, supersprint. they just purely thought we were up to no good cause we were in a saxo.... b***tards

Saxo_theedge
19th January 2009, 18:14
Supersprint pea shooter ftw!:y: Just looks standard to any cooper following you, and keep it low revs cant really hear it. All hell can break loose if needs be though lol

When i had my furio the centre pipe and backbox were fooked so i brought a mild steel centre pipe and backbox with chrome tip from a placed called benchmark which stock hundreds of standard exhausts ect. and its twice as loud as my old one which was blowing. And it is a standard exhaust!!

To fail the car on mot they'd need a standard Saxo to compare legally, reading that on page 3.

They'll have a database of noise levels.

The law says that it should not exceed 98db at 0.5 mtr at a 45deg from end of the exhaust. If a copper or mot tester says its to loud ask them to test it. If it is legal then its legal and they have no cause to complain.

i got pulled over last week for mine being to loud, and i have a magnex box on a supersprint system,

its really quiet until you plant your foot in the floor.

they just gave me a warning

wn5luke
19th January 2009, 19:19
do the police honestly no what a standard VTR/VTS exhaust is meant to look like?

Around Sidcup / SE London they dont =P Got pulled over in my fully standard VTR and they said the exhaust was an aftermarket exhaust then kicked my car lol.... Scum bag :(

JoshB
19th January 2009, 19:29
If this is true it will mean the end of aftermarket exhausts, and the rest of the companies will be following Magnex.

I get the point though of the cops, kids thrashing the nuts off their cars with their universal backboxes on at 11 at night is out of order.
Its just when they stop people at half 2 in the afternoon when youre having a quiet run out to the shops.

citroen_saxo_vtr
19th January 2009, 19:30
dont change it. i had the same and told him iv got mot with the exhaust, would you like me to mot it again? then he said oh ok i want it changed in 14 days or il take you to court. i said see you there then left. never ever seen him again and this was last summer lol.

its been these rules for 15 years.... not as if theyve just been brought out, providing u get an MOT station that rnt absolute wankers u will be fine, aswell some cars are louder standard than others so , aslong as u stay under the 100db limit or whatever it is, then tey cant do fuck all.... "too loud" isnt proof that ur over the limit

CHIP
19th January 2009, 19:42
TBF with us all being into cars, im sure we all know an mot tester who is a car enthusiast. They are quite often happy to look past 'certain things'. I'm not saying stuff like fucked discs and pads... but you know what i mean ;)

Always thought it was 98db.
Been pulled a few times, never said shit about my exhaust, one was just to ask where i got my 4pots from :afro:

i agree, just cos the police say its "too loud", get them to test it and if they dont then they cant do a thing about it

barrett130
19th January 2009, 21:55
appeal my friend contact vosa and tell them he didnt test it on a calibrated machine, then they will seriously look into his testing facilitys they are very strict with the testers. they even moaned about the roof where i work lol apparently it looks too old lol

Recently had mine noise tested (for when i go on track) the limit at the track im going to is 98db and my exaust pulled it off in 96.4db....

Thats with a 4-1 Mani, SS straight through and a Peco Back Box, obviously will have the CAT in place for the MOT and it is VERY quiet compared witht he cat in....

I think yas are all worrying JUST abit to much!!

If you are REALLY that botherd, put the standard rear box on for MOT time, takes 5 mins.....

davidharvey
20th January 2009, 02:38
When I had the RS1600 I got pulled for a noisy exhaust. I pulled out the noise test certificate from 2 days before...that shut them up.

Pfft, 83db Pugsport @ 4500.:fcuk:

Really does sound standard round town.

Cant say i've ever been pulled for a noisy exhaust, and my old one was loud.

As said, the law about non-standard exhausts failing MOTs, im sure i've heard about it before, but obviously nothing's been done about it, whether they're deciding to crack down on it now or not, I dunno.

i had a straight through exhaust on my fiesta as soon as i puled up the tester said that will fail your missing half your exhaust aren't you lol i just said no its all there complete under the car haha he tested it the emissions just scraped by and for the noise test he told me to drive down the road!!! haha so i just kept it above idling speed and he over looked it but put excessive exhaust noise system on the advisory lol one copper told me its time to change my exhaust i told her its time to keep your nose out as its legal then just shrugged and went off grrrrr i get pissed off reading threads like this when coppers take the law in to their own hands which aint their job!

That's about the pain threshold of a human ear. And not much less than standing 100ft away from a jet engine at take off.

I hope they bum raped you for that.
