I'm considering getting into this as i'm very interested in it, also suits me a lot as well due to the physical nature of the job. Is any one here a tree surgeon or do something similar? If so do you enjoy it and what's the pay like?
Thanks.:y:

My friend is currently training to be one, only thing I can tell you is if you are under 18 (not checked if you are or not) you cannot go to college to do a course, due to chainsaws etc... so he has had to do a year of horticulture or something.

sounds like a plan Karl, you get any joy finding the apprenticeship applications ?

You need licenses for this and that, god knows how much insurance. We've done tree work but aren't allowed to do anything thats above 20ft. I doubt you'll become one overnight but it is a good laugh if the crew you work with are right.

You should also try and get in on the landscaping/gardening side of things to. Its not gay, Ive enjoyed the last 5 years or so doing it and aim to be self employed one day. The reason is that you aren't always gaurenteed tree work so you could end up out of pocket potentially. Also be careful if you go o the commercial side.

If you get into landscaping you'd be doing everything. That would include, block paving, patios, ponds, decking, driveways, drainage, turf/grass seed and of course planting. If you just did maintenance you'd be cutting grass, pruning shrubs, weeding (although theres ways around that lol) and just generally keeping the garden tidy. IMO, you'd be better off with a small company/one man band if possible to make sure you get all the benefits from their knowledge and experience. Depends how deep and far into you want to go. When I left school I wasnt sure what I wanted to do and I had the chance to do an NVQ in landscaping (this one was work based so I didnt actually go into college - all paperwork and evidence is home or site visited and assessed). I thought 'give it a go' as i had nothing to lose. This was end of 2004 btw. I completed NVQ 2 then did NVQ 3. Yes its a lot of paper work in the early stages. Im now doing a degree in landscape and garden design and still enjoying it. I just knew i didnt want to be stuck in an office all day everyday on the computer, paperwork, filing etc.

Oright that sounds very interesting and something I would deffinatley consider, that is weird because i'm in a very similar situation to you because i'm at my school's sixth form but I hate it and I know I don't want to be stuck in an office all day and would rather do something hand's on. Have you got any link's about landscaping and also what is your hours and pay if you don't mind me asking mate?

I start at 8(ish) and work till 5(ish). Its earlier this time of year as it gets dark early. When I was doing my NVQ, pay started at £70 a week (set by college), then went up to 80, then 90. Im just above minimum wage at the moment so its about £114 for 3 days work (Im in college/uni monday and tuesday). At the time, money wasnt a problem as I didnt have a car (only got it in September, crashed it in January :( ). I pay my Mum some money each week to help with running costs but its surprising how quickly it soon adds up in the bank. Tbh, I dont go out drinking every friday and saturday, i prefer staying in so save my money. still managed to afford a 32' hd tv and xbox360 last year too. If I were you, write down all your expenses and compare it with what ever wage you get to see if its a viable option. You might earn a different amount to me.
Have a search which colleges in your area to see if they offer what you want to do. You never know, might see something else that you prefer. That way you'll be able to get a full qualification. Employers will always prefer experience but if you're willing to learn and are really enthusiastic about it...

i know 9 tree surgeons and non of them went to college. all they had to get was a chainsaw licence which was done by a inspector guy at there work.
