not that loud, most of mine is induction roar but new legislation states the noise level is comparible to a standard silencer in good condition so louder than that you get a red sheet

28th January 2009, 00:59
this law has always been there, but at the end of the day its down to the testers discretion (spellin)
for me its personally no problem because i work in a mot garage, but we have never failed a car for having a loud aftermarket exhaust, and in chatham theres plenty of em about, but you may want to check with your local garage prior to test or go standard just to be safe

might aswell try with aftermarket exhaust will either pass or not and a retest is free and standard exhaust takes 10 mins to fit really so not a big problem. especially if you now the mot guy anything passes

This is true. VOSA recently amended the testing requirements for exhaust noise. Do a search. There was a thread on here a few days ago

why do people keep shitting on about this it has always been that if it to noisey it will fail it hasn't just come in,its just that most tester let people off and some tester are just strict and will fail it end off

28th January 2009, 09:04
end of the day people are sick of chavs flying round with there 10" exhausts pissing everyone off. Obviously the law has told mot testers to be stricter on exhaust noise. I'm cool with this. Just find yourself a good mot tester in an independent garage and he'll whack it through. These normal garages like nationwide autocentre etc. will be mega strict they got no choice.

Exactly, will depend how much an ass the MOT tester is.
Guy I take mine to wouldn't pull it up I doubt.

If its on noise how is it per model or just a generalisation ie a lambo at 2.5 k will be louder than a saxo

I think the whole 'new legislation' thing is just to get MOT testers to be a bit more vigilant. It has always been the law that the MOT tester can fail the car if they deem it to be too loud.
At the end of the day, I can't see how they can really enforce it... unless VOSA state the vehicle must be below xx dB at xxxx RPM. Just find an MOT tester who isn't bitter towards Saxo drivers with aftermarket exhausts.

but whats it got to do with other folk what peope do with there cars?

I'm struggling to see how this legislation will be properly enforced. Its basically saying you can have anything louder than standard noise output, if this was true then its bye bye aftermarket exhaust manufacturers. Surely companies like Piper/Supersprint etc would be fighting this and there would be announcements about it on car modifying websites, ie Demon-Tweeks/Larkspeed etc.
I agree that a car should fail an MOT for having a stupidly loud exhaust as there is just no need for it, and it is probably against the law regarding noise levels after/before 11pm/7am. But pointed at the comment above about a standard Lambo/Ferrari, they are damn loud as standard, VOSA need to stick to 98db for any car, simple as.

Because it fecking annoying when youre trying to get to bed at 11 because you've got work at 6am and theres 3 kids with rediculously loud exhausts bouncing them off the limiter on your street.
