hi guys!
im sick to death of this now,
i drive a cammed etc vts running 160.9 on the RR
its going through gearboxs and shafts like they made of plastic!
i killed the 3rd box tonight and im sick to death of it, sounds like the diff this time.
2 guys i spoke to reckon coz of the power but i never hear of this happening to other tuned 16v's.

know the feeling, my vts is sitting with a hole in the box atm, are you letting the box heat up ?

You might want to use an advanced gearbox oil with better shock properties.
How do you drive the car - hard from standing starts?

driving error is what tends to kill boxes.
hard standing starts will load the transmission and shafts, as will changing gear as fast as poss and ramming it in gear

6boxes in 2 years mate although i always seem to buy half dead boxes anyways. mines down to alot of full throttle starts and harsh gear changes from the track. Although the last year i have been feeding the power in rather than stomping it in and havent blown this one up yet :) touch wood

Depends on how its treated..Dont rush the Syncro's and makesure decent gearbox oil is used and the correct amount is in there and you should be ok..
Also dropping the clutch at high revs is a no no..Rally car's do it but they have plated diffs usually which are super strong..

Is your clutch adjustment spot on as well? i have that problem with 1st and reverse... wind your clutch out a bit so theres a less bight (so the bites further away from the floor) not to much though lol :)

yes it will
will it go like a bag of shit though? or are the ratios fairly decent?
would prefer good aceleration over top speed.

surely this is the reason if your putting gearboxes from cars with less power in from the start they stand no chance with hard driving

1.4 boxes on vts is shite, done it and it is was terrible
mine are always left to warm up, sometimes i am harsh with it depends if im having abit play, in this instance i was nailing a golf 1.8T :D

The 1.4 boxes are not suitable for the 16v engine..The Final drive and ratio's are no good for the high revving nature of the 16v engine..
Also the VTR and VTS boxes have bigger stronger diffs for a reason, the smaller engined car's have smaller weaker diffs, will break quite quickly..

if you fully rebuild a vts box new sycros and bearings etc and put a quaiffe atb diff in, can you drive it much harder then? eg, hard standing starts etc?

been threw four boxes since march last year need a strong one that can take hard starts and hard gear changes, after all they are all hot hatches so we wanna drive hard dont we? any one no a strong box i can fit with out custom drive shafts? iv got a gti one in at the moment and seems to be the best second hand i have had. by the way shitroen want 1800 pound for a new one so dont even think about that, as much as i paid for my saxo!
