View Full Version : Exhaust Clicking

I've had problems with my exhaust ever since i bought the car in February and it broke under warranty.

For some reason i get a clicking noise from the downpipe/centre section joint. I cant work out whats wrong. I'm having to put copper grease on the spring, the metal cups and the mesh reducer in order to stop it from cracking under acceleration. It cures my problem but starts making the noise again after severe wet weather obviously where the grease has been washed away.

What the hell is it that is causing this. Its driving me up the wall! Would a new mesh reducer thing be causing it? I've put new springs and washers too.

Can anyone suggest a solution?

I know the EXACT reason!

Your down pipe should have a hole drilled out in it for a bolt to go through. Basically its been bodged and your missing a bolt that goes from down pipe and connects into the gear box, This snops the down pipe from wobbeling when engine is under acceleration. I beloeve its a METRIC 12? bolt. Not sure. You'll see what i mean if you look under the car.

When your down pipe moves, it moves your whole exhaust system (Will cause it to split soon) and the movement moves the back box becasue the whole exhaust system is mooving.

My old manifold did this and it was bolted to the gearbox.

Try tightening the two bolts on that joint a bit more. If that doesn't solve it, try a new fire ring gasket.

OR. If all fails. New exhaust mounts. You got a exhaust mount towards the rear of the car. Under where the back seats are?

Cheers guys. I've got the 2 bolts done up quite tight to the spring without over tightening them and it still does it. I originally thought maybe that the rust in the cups that the spring sits it was causing it so i replaced the 2 bolts, springs and nuts and that didnt cure until I put grease on it and now the grease has worn off again, its causing it to do it again and i just cant see what else it could be.

What about engine mounts? Could the gearbox engine mount be worn to cause this?

It's definitely those bolts mate. I'm pretty sure tightening mine right up with nylocs did the trick.

Could be your rear engine mount, just under the gear box. Can you feel the car wobble slightly when you are under hard acceleration?
