View Full Version : Judder at clutch bite point

Clutch / car has started to judder a bit at bite point when pulling away... :n:
Noticing a slight whine when crossing gear stick across gate towards reverse position (only with clutch up). Gear change also got a bit stiff / clunky.
Whine noise makes me think its a clutch release bearing issue, but does the judder indicate something more like flywheel / box issues? :(

I've lost a couple of down-pipes through cracking at bracket. Have ordered a stiffer lower mount (powerflex) and will get that fitted before anything else.

Advice appreciated!!!!

Judder is normally a warped friction/pressure plate...

As to the whine have you ever checked your gearbox oil level? could simply need a gear oil change.

What does that mean? BIG ££ or a simple one for a proper gearbox place? What £ we talking if I get a clutch kit fitted at same time?

The clutch should cost no more than round £120 for labour plus clutch, thats arround what i would charge, What milage has it done?

If your not doing it your self id get a new thrust bearing put in, and make sure the garage put new gear oil in and see if your whine has gone, If not then it could indicate the bearings inside the box, I would say that a new clutch, thrust bearing and new gear oil should cure your problems.

Cheeky git. It's become a nightmare to pull away and not shake it to bits. Bite aint changed too much lately, maybe gone a bit wooly at the top inch or so is all.
Found the whine is in gear and moving across the gate to reverse side and it kicks in?
Had the box and clutch done a year or so back on the cheap.... arse

On the cheap says it all, most probaby a cheap clutch and if you have rode it once or twice, it has then warped the friction plate, as i said get a decent clutch - valeo, new thrust bearing, and some decent gear oil. is it slipping at all or is it just bad judder.

Just judder.... Cheap as in £500 all in. I've arranged to pop in and see them again tomorrow. Gearbox is out of warranty, but maybe clutch still has manufacturers warranty or something.
Bastard needs two new tyres and got some suspension work planned next week too.... :( Pants.

my car does both of those things, the shaking used to be really violent then i replaced the clutch and it has eased slightly, leading me to think that its more pressure plate or even warped flywheel related. the whine when you move the gearstick in neutral with the clutch up is the shift fork chafing on one of the shafts in the gearbox and is normal

Right.
Judders, knocks and clunks underneath like a bee-atch in reverse. Different perspective in the passenger seat, gearbox guy reckons its possibly lower gearbox mount (again).
He said not to worry about the clutch or the whine, though he hadn't known that whining sort of noise before.
So.... next week he's gunna have it for the morning, do the suspension work for me, fit the lower powerflex mount, assess the other engine mounts then see what the clutch/judder thing is like and hopefully we'll be back on the road again!

^^ No idea if you have sorted this mate but its a cracked clutch plate you have in time it will totally cack and a spring will dislodge. basically when you are engaging gear from it slowly moving round it catches hard on the crack sticking up

you getting the uprated mount?

EDIT: just read your post properly

my understanding is that stiffer engine and gearbox mounts will cause more vibrations

Got the stiffer lower mount fitted. Seems to have got rid of some of the excessive play and clunking in reverse. Got a nice shaky car now though!
Still juddering when I pulll away... I'm reconditioning a g.box at the moment to be fitted soon. I'll go balls deep and replace the flywheel and clutch while I'm at it.
