illeagal, everything and anything thats not completly standard is! its a £30 fine, doesnt stop people where i live getting them though cause the police in northern ireland dont care, so its up to you whether you chance it.

the actual size of the plate isnt regulated.

its the spacing and font that are.

if you have a personal reg with less characters then you could legally have a shorter plate as long as the spacing and font are correct

but if you have a smaller plate size, the font and spacing have to be smaller to fit on!

depends what you mean by smaller.

i said shorter. so the plate would be standard height i.e. using the standard font and spacing.

lol gerry gerry gerry, bit of a debate going on in here! interesting point though as I have a number missing so im theory I can get away with a plate that is same height but not as wide... hmmm

Legal.

Plates can be any size/shape, its the font size/type and how much plate surrounds them that matters.

I have plates on my other car that are cut round the letters, this is the second car they have been on , had them probably 4 years, travelled allover the UK and NEVER had any trouble with them.

Some cars (rover springs to mind?) have rear plates that are curved at bottom.

lots of coppers do not know motoring laws, and that includes traffic.

Disclaimer...I am not a lawyer/copper/legal expert.....so use my advice here at your own risk. LOL
