Need some advice on the legalities of window Tinting.

Saw this auction on ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/DEFENDER-CITROEN-SAXO-3DR-2003-ON-FULL (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/DEFENDER-CITROEN-SAXO-3DR-2003-on-FULL-WINDOW-TINT-KIT_W0QQitemZ8007060184QQcategoryZ43117QQssPageNam eZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) -WINDOW-TINT-KIT_W0QQitemZ8007060184QQcategoryZ43117QQssPage NameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

the limo tint that they have on there is:

* Light Transmission 5%
* Heat reduction 45%
* UV Reduction 99%
* Glare Reduction 94%

I was thinking about getting that on rear and rear side windows and getting light smoked on the front side windows.

* Light Transmission 35%
* Heat reduction 32%
* UV Reduction 99%
* Glare Reduction 58%

Would that be legal?

cheers
Scott

Apparently

Glass behind the b post can have any grade of vlt film fitted provided the vehicle in question is equipped with 2 exterior rear view mirrors, ie door or wing mirrors.

and for he front:

45% vlt, visible light transmission, on windows forward of the b post, at a road side check, any darker and the owner/driver will be issued with a prohibition order

So I'll probably not get limo but dark smoked on the windows behind the b-post and notbhing on front windows. smileys/smiley17.gif

All my side windows are light smoked, apparently if you tint the 2 front side windows then its illegal, but iam willing to take the risk as theres alot of cars around here with all windows tinted (appart from the windscreen) & even darker then mine, ive also seen cars going around with dark smoke tints on the rear window & side windows & a light smoke on the 2 front side windows

What they say is basically correct.

From the legality view of things, you cannot have your front side windows or front windscreen tinted.

However, you can have anything behind that as dark as you like.

I had light smoke done all round. Touch wood that I haven't been to ask to rip it off the front.

yeh i think i'm going to get light smoke on front side windows and dark smoke on rear side and rear window.

Did you get it done professionally or did you get a kit?

found one for 30 quid on ebay smileys/smiley17.gif

im pretty sure you can tint the front side windows legally (as long as they a 25% or less) , i have mine done and have been pulled a few times by the police (for other things) and they have never said anything about them.

yeh you can tint them slightly but you have to make sure that the factory fitted tint and the tint you add to it still lets 75 percent of light through.

How much is it to get it done professionally?

I got mine done professionally and paid £125 for all five windows.

This is a pic I have which shows the 'light smoke' all round...

I didnt want to hand someone else over £100 of my cash to tint my windows so my dad did it for me, i took all the side windows out & he did it for me, i got the tinting film from halfrauds, its about £20 a roll & i needed 2 rolls, theres quite a few tiny air bubbles on each window but not really noticable unless you know they are there & your looking for them, havent done the rear window as it was to hard to even attempt, although i'll finally get around to tinting it.

I had them done in Essex.

It was far too dark for my liking and I was forever being pulled over by the police.

my personal view is that if you dont want to get attention from the old bill only get light smoked.i think it looks better anyway

If you don't want attention from the 'old bill' then don't get your windows tinted at all.

yes but we want a little bit of style dont we?of course their more likely to pull you over for having tints but if you have a light smoke your obviously less likely to be pulled over than having limo black tints thats my point

Light smoke is better than limo, but the police wont see it like that. If your car has tints, then your car has tints.

But... some people take risks (like me) and touchwood I have yet been asked to remove the tints from the front side windows.
