Anyone do it?
One of mates was chatting to me last week about this. He's always had a thing about getting into trading and the stock markets and all that shizzle.
Now it's early days for me, and the fact I actually don't gamble and don't even know how to use those gambler machines, but fancy researching a bit and taking a plunge. As its less about outright luck and more about good analytical skillz, luck, and experience I'm guessing.
My previous landlord used to do this and made enough to buy 20 properties in the Guildford area, owns a 7 bedroom house and has a handy man to do everything for him - his handyman has a mercedes
- so that's the upside
Danr knows him
- so that's the landlord's downside.
My mate, from an initial investment of £50 is down £35 by the way :ponder:

I read about this in a magazine. It seems quite good for the amateur.
Have you tried it Ad?

There was a programme on recently on bbc one about this. Was a 4 week thing where about 8 ametuers had to manage a 1 million dollar hedge fund.
IIRC one person actually made profit.

We play £10 games on roulette in the bookies.
3 people play, £10 on one spin, idea is to get to £30 to make everyone's tenner back.
You either win or lose, if you lose the other people go.
We started of the other day with £10 each went home with £150

yeah I watched that too man...
A lot of them just blindly traded on random shite rather than thinking about it (at least that's how it was portrayed).

That's true but even the main man made a loss! Also the asian guy who worked in the shop did it at home and made a huge loss as a student.
If you can afford to do it give it a go. Remember though it's so easy to make a loss. Companies aren't rapidly expanding like the used to.

There is going to be millions of web pages about how people made loads and very few if any where people will have admitted they've had to sell their house :err:

5 mins later, i left with £10.
Was playing that roulette game on the computers.
i pwned.
Untill...
A guy walked in.. Put £6 in the machines and walked out 10 mins with £118

totally true man I don't deny that. Just I'm interested and if you've got good analytical skillz then you stand a better chance than those that just blindly click away :)

i gamble here and there, cant say i am good at it, but i lost almost £12k when 911 happened and so far i have lost about £350 because of the credit crunch. although saying that, in the past i have had holidays and even a almost new Audi from it.
the best 'share' i own is one for a film being made, it is more of a buy because of what it stands for rather then making money....thought you never know, if its a blockbuster (which i very much doubt) i might be looking at buying myself something nice lol

Yes, what i would say is...
go for longer term investments
only risk what you can afford to lose
watch out for "hidden costs"
share price = speculation
eggs and plenty of baskets
like you say dude, there is a lot of info out there and there are areas that tend to perform better in downturns.
i know what you mean, its nice to build up a portfolio.

Sayer ive been looking into this too, try etx capital they let you set up a player account that uses virtual funds but on their actual spread betting system so you can get used to it/see if you can do it etc.then if you decide to you can change the account and use real money. The account also has mandatory stop losses in place so you cannot lose an infinite amount etc.
One thing I will say though is there isn't much in the way of guides/tips etc on there like there is with IG.

Im into shares and stuff. All im going to say is that you really have to research before you buy. I have lost 2.5k on rbs, but made 1k on them at a lower price. I also bought into a coal mining company and have quadrupled there so happy with that. You just gotta find the right time and boom do it!

worked out a good stratagy on IGindex.
i have my stop limit set realy high so if i jump in at 4425 my stop would be set at 4350, and my limit would only be about 4440, thats if i where buying. and i watch the graph so when it looks realy low id jump in on the up.
this costs more and you have more chance of loosing alot, but the chances of the market going that low seem unlikely if you watch the daily average.
because i have a limit set i can go to work safe in the knowlage that if i hit my limit im out with a nice little profit.
the gamble comes if the market moves the other way like crazy i loose big =(
having small stops and limits if naff because the market moves too quickly!
19-FEB-09 jumped in4011.5 bet per point£+0.10 limit4030 p/l1.85+
i had my stop set at somthing like 3963
what's your stratagy?

still just keeping an observation at the moment...
Keeping an eye on the FX mainly... EUR/GBP has interested me (shot up 100 points in the space of an hour yesterday so some news must have hit BIG TIME, but yet to find out what).
really I want to hedge, so I need to gather more information and interest in other currency's i think. Then I can lay out a few buys and sell simultaneously.
that's the plan at least!

be very very very long time man... I'm going ultra slow at this, phantom trading until things start to make some sort of sense... then play with small amounts of dosh (like a tenner - 10p per point trades).
Ideally i wish I'd looked into this when I was employed and had more time on my hands :wall:

The thing with currencies is that th Market is very volatile as you found with the jump yesterday, bear in mind that it can just as easily slip 100pts in a short space of time and then you either have to have the funds in your account to cover or make a margin call.

unless your watching it constantly you wont be able to do this, i can only do it with limits and stop's. the problem with spred betting is you HAVE to have a stop which is what costs, thats how these company's make their money. unless you have the funds to have a nice big stop your alright and you can go long.. otherwise your stuffed because if you can only afford a small stop lets say 10 points you dont stand a chance.
that was my don fall to begin with.
one other thing with IGindex... you start at 10p per point, but after your intro period it jumps to £1 per point! so it will cost you hundreds of ££'s to go long.
makaveli144
19th February 2009, 19:01
a stop which is what costs
Who are you using if your stop costs? Also stops are not guarenteed, there can be slippage.
unless you have the funds to have a nice big stop your alright and you can go long.. otherwise your stuffed because if you can only afford a small stop lets say 10 points you dont stand a chance.
Its actually harder to short. And whether you have 10points long or 10points short the market can still go either way and catch you out. You should not set a stop so low anyway due to natural fluctuations in the markets.

What my mates did was enter a online big monye poker tournimeant was something silly like 6 players at £500 a pot each so what happened was on of my mates created a room my other 4 joined the room an waited for a 6th player, they then worked togeather to beat the 1 player talked on MSN with what hands and what to do next etc and they then split the £500 5 ways for a £100 profit, did this once a night providing they won 99% of the time they did!
