what happens?

ive just bought something from the states and its coming within the next 3 days but it requires a signature which i wont be able to give as im at work all day smileys/sad.gif my question is what do they do with it i know royal mail push a note through and ask you to to collect it from the local depot but what do fedex do? i dont even know if there is a depot in my area.
