You can't make someone be interested in something that's of no interest to them at all. My mum doesn't understand why I modified my car so I just don't speak to her about it.

You'll sort your problem of her whinging about it if you just stop talking to her about it. Speak to her about something else that you both enjoy instead

lol emmm im lucky.... i think my mum liked cars in her youth, although she doesnt admit it, i know this becuase she had a Ford Capri laser back in the day, very nice car imo. She doesnt mind me doing stuff to my car, its more my dad, he sees it as a waste of money because it is not what he is interested in. I dont think there is much you can do to get them interested, i doubt you would really want to invite your mum along to the shows and unless the two of you take up a mechanics class or something then id say just let it go.... i dont care what my dad says... its my money and ill do what i want with it.... sensibly though :)

If your mum was into knitting and you found it the most boring hobby on the planet then would you be willing to listen to her banging on about it?

You can't make her listen to you lol

i dont like it when they dont listen, i dont necessarily want them to agree with me about what im doing, i do it anyway, im 18, nearly 19, and i still feel the need to ask my parents permission when it comes to big things like that, although i pay for the mods myself, i still feel an obligation to seek approval, all i need is an " i dont agree but you can do it". But as most will say, you can't make someone interested in something that doesnt interest them, im sure you and your mum must have other things in common ??

The more you speak to your mum about cars and your next mod the more she will moan at you for the amount of money you're spending on your car. If she's not aware of what money you're spending on your car then she can't complain can she?

GirlRacerSian

Just ask her would she perfer you going out and doing what you like doing with cars now,or sleeping around like some girls would be doing at your age.
She may understand you a bit more after that.

My mum loves my car, she wont drive it though because she thinks she is going to break it because it is lowered! My Dad was the same he encouraged me to modify my car and he fitted my cold air feed for me because he wanted to be involved, when I bought car magazines home he used to nick them before i had chance to look at them, then he would hatch all theses plans to modify his car when he retired!

both my mother and father don't like the fact that i spend most of my money on my car.
they always complain about me not saving up for later, but i honestly do not give a shit.
i'll save up later, when i have finished work on my saxo :D

yup, me mam thinks my exhaust is too loud and that i spend to much time and money on my car. she finds it really strange that i spend like 5-7hours cleaning my car.

my dad however likes to help when somthings broken, but he dosent care about the modding, he trys to make me justify everything.

i try not to talk to them about it tbh... my missus loves teh car tho lol

My mum used to be the same with me, after i got my first saxo which was my 4th car she said she hoped this was the end of me spending my money on cars. But now im another 2years down the line and on my 8th car and she has got used to it now. She knows i got in loving cars through my Dad who had been a mechanic for my whole childhood. I dont bother telling her how much things cost because i know she will moan about it. But its my money and i will do what i want with it :P

I've never had this problem with my parents luckily. I grew up in a car mad household. My dad was in the motor trade and he's a big ford fan. He got his first car, a Sunbeam Stiletto, at 15 and modified it so understood when me and my brother did the same. We spent our childhoods going to car shows and watching the track action at Goodwood. My mum is not as much as a car fan but she's had to be one because of the rest of the family. But she's had some nice cars. Her first car was a XR4i and she's had, RS turbo's and Toyota Supra's etc and now has a MR2 Roadster. My boyfriend is even more of a petrolhead than me and we've always got at least 4 or 5 cars at a time lol. We spent the weekends last summer going for drives in the countryside or to car shows as a family. Me and the bf in our Chimaera, dad and mum in their TVR Tamora and my brother and his gf in his MGTF 160. So I've been really lucky when it comes to sharing hobbies with my family.

When I went to uni though I found it really difficult. None of my mates were into cars and they just didn't understand at all why I was so protective of my car and spent money modifying it when I was a poor student lol. Luckily I met my bf not long after because I was missing just being able to talk to someone about cars lol.

The only problem we've got at the moment is that my mum and dad can't understand why we are insisting on getting a thirsty V6 as our family car for when the twins arrive when we have the saxo, a BX 16v and the TVR as well. But I just couldn't drive a boring car eveyday

my dad's ok. shows a bit of interest and he used to help me out with mods before i had any tools. always lie about the cost though!

rest of my family aren't interested and they make it quite obvious, so i just avoid the subject now, even if they bring it up. they don't understand why i mess around and can't just leave the car as it is. so i just save the car chat for my mates who share the same interest

my mum moans about me spending money. i just explain that part of the reason i modify from the standard spec is because the car doesn't look/sound/perform how i want it to when it leaves the factory. her car has 19s, lower stiffer suspension, big brakes, leather seats, premium sound system, vented bonnet, twin exhausts etc etc but because that's how it left the factory, it's a completely different kettle of fish. even though upgrades tend to cost more from the dealer than getting them done afterwards

i could be spending my time and money on worse things and at least i've got something to show for it instead of pissing it all up the wall!
