id get a second opinion first mate, headgasket =burning oil/water, oil in mayo etc, over heating etc.
leaking oil is split seal/gasket/breather etc and piss easy to fix

The head gasket failure on my VTS started with an oil leak at the front timing end corner at 46k. The TU engines are all prone to premature head gasket failure.

If it's only a small oil leak then you will get away with leaving it for a bit and just keep an eye on the leak and check the oil and coolant regularly as well. If the coolant starts to drop or you start getting oil in with the coolant (brown sludge on the top) then it is time to get the head gasket replaced. If the coolant starts to drop then it could be going in with the oil which will stop it from lubricating properly which is bad news for pretty much all of the engine!
Is it a VTS by the way?

also prone to going is the mk1's with paper head gasket, the multilayered metal headgasket fixed this problem on the later models. so 2002 will have the later gasket, i still say get a second opinion.

even if it is HG, if you catch it early no damage will be done, just dont give the car a hard time.
