View Full Version : Had my first proper scare today :(

Been driving about 5 weeks now and i just had my first proper scare on the road :(

About an hour ago, was going on a lil drive with mates after being at the pub (Only had half a pint..) a coupleof mates in one car and a couple in mine so we set off i lead the way to some really good roads, anyway all was well, we were doing about 70 in the national speed limit which was a bit silly i guess,

Anyway theres this notorious bend, (Is a long straight road then a slight hump in the road then a pretty sharp bend straight after the hump)

Hit the hump at about 65 then relised SHIT the bend, steered, the back slid right out i was at about 75 degrees then corrected and slid the other way 75 degrees, then again, managed to keep control dunno how just went into autopilot, i pulled over and my drove alongside and i was like fuck me, i was shitting it lol, my mates in the car thought it was 'pretty sick'..

I was so lucky because if i had clipped the curb in any of those slides my car would be upturned in a field right now :( you learn from your mistakes i guess just thankful i didnt loose it!

Gah!

Personally mate, I dont think you should be driving like that, especially with such little experience under your belt. And any amount of alcohol will effect you, over the limit or not. I never touch a drop if I am driving.

Yeah was a lil silly i know the roads of by heart though as i go for a drive round them before work, just totally forgot about the bend for some reason:(

And i vowwed never to touch alcohol when driving but it was a mates 19th today and gave in and said ok ill have a half pint.

Deffo wont be telling my parents they would go freakin nuts lol!

was it sign posted, if so you should take note of signs they tell you bends way before a corner, read the road right be a safe driver simple as ;)

Nope it isnt sign posted at all, and at night because of the small hump you cant see it, as you go over the hump its like ooo a bend. and im guessing the hump throws all the weight in the air making it easier to slide out.

Alot of cars have ended up in the field, luckily its just like a big common next to it.

Live and learn mate.

Sure you'll have many more scary moments. Well done on controlling it, some retards would of let go of the wheel and panicked.

I also drink and drive. I used to never even think about driving if i was going to be driving. But as i work behind a bar i often have a shandy after work and a chat with the lads (seems only way to have a social life at weekends after working 10:30am to midnight friday and saturday :n:). I only live a mile away from work and roads are really deserted by the time i've locked up.

I know you said only a shandy.... but if its only a shandy you wouldnt have to be worried about deserted roads and the short distance to travel...
Condoning drink driving isn't too clever really....

stop driving like a dick tbh, youve been driving for 5 weeks and have a vtr which is a bad combination if your out on the lanes with your mates. learn to drive properly for a while

I see someone getting a little stick for having half a pint and driving, I see nothing wrong with this. Its not illegal, and if i agree with something i condone it.

I dont condone drinking over the limit and driving as i think the drink driving limit is fair.

Question for all the angels on saxp.
Have you had a night out and drove the next morning?

If so, chances are you've been driving over the limit.

And definately more likely more units than half a larger or a shandy.

were you showing off to your mates? common thing new drivers do.

i never drive with my mates how i do on my own. not worth risking their lives as well as mine.

sometimes something to shake you up can be good, just lets you know how easy it is to crash, will make you more cautious and more aware of what could happen

so long as your alright :y:

Tbh I think anyone who drives after drinking ANY amount of alcohol is a tit, why risk it? You got very luck by the sounds of it, don't make the same mistake again because you might not get the same chance..

A night drive, after the pub, after drinking alcohol, with car full of mates, very little driving experience, notorious stretch of road .

count yourself v.lucky.

My first scare i was doing 60 up a country lane, cliped the grass on my left and pulled a sharp right, then left, then right, left again unill i was spinning round and round in circles and ended up backwards in a ditch pointing at the sky, got out without a scratch, and to top it off right outside jacksons recovery. haha

haha

my first worst 1 was wen i joined the cov ring road and some van let me through so i put my hazzards on to say thanks, as i glanced down at my hazzard switched i looked back up and the traffic was all backed up, i slammed brakes on, which are absolutly wank brakes and i knew it wernt gna stop so i swerved across 2 other lanes cutting up 2 cars which had to slam theres on. and my car just kind of swerved and mounted the kerb. the woman that i would have went into the back of at about 35/40mph was in a shitty old micra with too young kids in the back. she got out to check if i was alright though which was nice. you learn from your mistakes, like i never use my hazards to say thanks and i try to read the road ahead, i was only driving for a week after that happend.

sorry bout essay, just thought id share my story :homme:

Doing 70 after a beer at night with not much driving exp and a car full of people to distract you is a no no, also national speed limit on a single carriage way is 60mph so add to that speeding

Theory test obviously worked (http://www.abd.org.uk/know_your_speed_limits.htm)

it's not the legality of it that's the problem paul... it's actually having alcohol in your system. some countries have complete ban on it, some have a higher limit than ourselves.

it's a real grey area to be honest. best advice is to not drink at all I won't.

morning after.... meh./

you might no the roads off by heart, but you dont know if there is any other cars coming from around that bend do you...

hmmm, i wonder why saxo's are such a high insurance group - even the 1.1's...
