Hi people

Bit of a random post, but has anyone on here had a renault 5 gt turbo?

The reason I ask is am thinking about having a weekend fun car and like the idea of a retro 80's hothatch and the 5 is top of the list.

Just interested in people opinions or are 5's more hassle than they are worth?

Cheers

Salty

Id love one :(. I was thinking the same as ryan. It will be that they 'melt' their turbo's and that the eat head gaskets!!

Well cool cars, there is an old guy that comes into my work with and untouced one. Its grey with orange stickers. Its soo cool. But it has towbar.

ere, yeah right, i hit boost like with it and it was runnin 100 million brake horse and the wheels and everything...

renault 5's are awesome if the intential idea is for a fun car... abuse and still want to play around with it under the hood. and you can slam the fuck out of them :y:

that or a Nova with 2 ltr 8v in there... imo more fun :D

The engines are meant to be very easy to work on and great for someone with any mechanical knowlege.

You tend to only get the big problems it seems when winding the boost up for no reason or chasing massive power and not doing it properly.

Alot have been abused badly and thats externally aswell as the engines.

I had one years ago, my first quick car. Loved it even though I bought a snotter. Get a good one and just look after it and it'll be fine.

Ive had one, personally wouldnt have one as a full time car as they can be tempermental....... if its only gonna be a weekend car get one, you will love it...
Make sure you check the usual around the engine etc etc... and also when driving in second gear, dip the clutch and let it back out to see if it pops out of gear, a common problem but an easy enough fix

My Dream Car...

Really want one!

Get an uprated headgasket and some quality cooling system and the problems should go away shouldnt they?

I would use it as a weekend car too!

my mates has 2 5s and ones been rebuilt and put into a renault van whish looks awesome and his other one has 150k on with not one rebuild runs shy of 170bhp and spat out 3 gearbox's if you take care of it, should have no problems and his cars both get death!

just sold my raider which i had for one year and built from standard

used mine as weeknd car.

there are weak points in the car like fuel pump relays head gaskets and stuff

the main thing is make sure it feuling for the boost

alot of people turn the boost up a wear stuff down like heads id buy one of an enthusiast thats set up properly

however the driveability and the likeability factors outweighs the cons

great cars to drive serious around twistys made me smile

they are really appreciated by young and old for their quirkyness

standard brakes are wank so make sure you get one with upgrades or you'll land yourself in trouble

if you need any info ive had engines in out and alll about so just feel free to pm me

I got rid of mine because its the fear of then you turn the key it just wont start both mine have been near the nice side of 200bhp and the reliability just goes both cost £1k to get a mot to due to rust etc

Honestly.. I'd avoid 'em. I remember thinkin' I was the first one to discover these little beasts about two years ago. Lol. I was like.. "Wow guys.. Look at the diamond in the rough I found."
Lol. I was a camp child. Stiiiillll.. I went and spoke to my uncle.
He used to be a bit of a boy-racer when he was younger.. Had four of them.
Says they're most definately mechanics cars. Tend to have some serious problems concerning head gaskets and turbos. (If driven like they're supposed to be.]
Still.. They're still amazing machines.

16th March 2009, 22:13
the 21's can be rapid.

ive always loved the 5's due to my dad having one when i was younger. i would love to own one but would rather have a standard one.

there was a vag engined 5 at my last trackday with over 300bhp with a very good overall spec and it raped most of the cars on the day.

they are flimsy, i expect a 5/21 to be equally as bad though, why you are deffo better off with a newer VAG with the kids for sure

Cheers for replies people, think a check on finances is required here, really fancy getting a 5, any modding would be spent on brakes and suspension! Just need to find the right car now!
