I may sound bit stupid (lol)

I have read a few threads on ice (in car entertainment) I think, and people talk about what ohm their subs are which is better to have and what does single or dual voice coils mean and whats best smileys/smiley4.gif if there is any other jargen that is out there could you let me know and give me an explanaiton. cheers

right everything in the is world has a resistance when a current is passed through it, resistance is measured in Ohms.

Generally a sub will come with an Impedance (resistance) of 4 or 2 ohms.

Now a sub can have numerous voice coils and without going into the dyamnics of how a speaker works and what not we will just say that this is the bit that makes the cone move in time and in turn the cone produces the sound. In general most subs or speakers will have a single voice coil.

Some will come with 2 coils, or 4 or whatever. This doesnt generally mean better but it means that resistance can be altered. By wiring voice coils in different manners then the end resistance can be changed. Now why would you want to do that?

Going back to the first statement, everything has a resistance, the higher that resistance then the harder it is for current to pass through. So if we can give it a lower resistance then more power can pass.

Some amplifiers are able to work at 1/2/4 ohm load. If they can work at 1/2 ohm load then they can pump out more power at this level as there is less resistance being shown. So that is why people say their subs are at differenet levels. Having a dual voice coil allows you to play with the resistance as it can be wired in different ways to show difference resistances to the amp. Having a single coil limits you to that resistance unless you team it with another sub woofer with a single coil, in which case you gain the flexibility.
